Toreros Fall to Cougars in Conference Opener

San Diego drops 65-42 decision to Washington State

SAN DIEGO — San Diego women's basketball (4-6, 0-1 WCC) dropped a tough 65-42 decision to Washington State (6-6, 1-0 WCC) on Thursday night as they opened up conference play in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Thursday evening's contest started off slow, with neither team able to get on the board in the opening three minutes. 
  • Ava Ranson broke the deadlock at the 6:54 mark by knocking down a three to put the Toreros in front early. 
  • The Cougars ended the opening quarter on a 14-0 run to claim a 14-6 lead. 
  • A nice floater off a screen from Kylie Horstmeyer was the first bucket for USD in the second quarter. 
  • Lauren McCall drained back-to-back threes in the second quarter to cut the deficit to just four at 25-21 with 2:29 left in the second quarter.  
  • WSU extended their lead back to 33-21 as the first half came to a close. 
  • Courtney Wristen knocked down a clean pull up jumper in the paint to get the scoring started for San Diego in the third quarter. 
  • Truitt Reilly bagged a tough fade away bucket midway through the third quarter. 
  • The Cougars extended their lead to 56-31 as the third period came to a close. 
  • Horstmeyer opened up the fourth quarter with another floater. 
  • Hallie Rhodes converted a tough and-1 midway through the final period. 
  • Ranson closed out the scoring for the Toreros with a nice fast-break lay-up. 
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Ranson led the way for the Toreros as the lone double digit scorer, with 10 points and three assists.
  • McCall was just behind with nine points on a trio of clutch threes.
  • Horstmeyer pulled in a season-high eight rebounds. 
  • The front court of Wristen and Reilly each registered six boards of their own. 
UP NEXT
The Toreros will be back in action on Saturday night to take on Gonzaga as part of USD's men's and women's winter wonderland doubleheader in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Tip-off against the Bulldogs is set for 7:00 p.m.
