Broncos Defeat Toreros in Road Matchup

BOISE, Idaho – Hitting the road for the final time in non-conference play, the San Diego women's basketball team (3-5, 0-0 WCC) came up short against Boise State (9-2, 0-0 MWC) by a 76-59 final on Sunday afternoon from ExtraMile Arena.

Four of USD's five starters reached double figures in scoring, with Boise natives Ava Ranson and Lauren McCall combining to score 22 points apiece in their return home.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After the Broncos scored the first bucket of the afternoon, Courtney Wristen got to work on USD's offensive glass with a nice put back to even the game at two in the early minutes.
  • Playing in front of family and friends, McCall delivered her first of many three-point makes on a fast break to even the score at seven apiece.
  • The Broncos would go on to control the rest of the first quarter as they built a 27-9 lead through the first 10 minutes of action.
  • Wristen was once again ready to answer the call for her team as she scored USD's first points of the second quarter on a layup to cut San Diego's deficit down to 29-11.
  • The Toreros went on to make a late run just before halftime as Kylie Horstmeyer and Ranson made consecutive layups to get USD back within 19.
  • San Diego's defense delivered one last stop to end the first half as multiple Bronco shot attempts came up short as the Toreros headed to the locker room trailing 44-25.
  • Looking to claw their way back in the second half, USD got their first points of the third quarter on a Truitt Reilly layup followed by a Ranson made free throw to make the score 46-28 early in the second half.
  • McCall would then come through in a big way for her team as she made consecutive three-point shots to bring the Toreros within 13 with just 3:33 left on the third quarter clock.
  • Boise State would then respond with a run of their own as they entered the fourth quarter with a 62-40 lead.
  • Entering the fourth, McCall continued her phenomenal shooting performance as she knocked down a long distance three to bring USD back within 19 to start the new quarter.
  • The Broncos would go on to control the majority of the fourth quarter to pick up their ninth win of the season by a 76-59 final score from ExtraMile Arena.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Reilly had another extremely efficient scoring night as she totaled 14 points on 6-of-10 from the field to go along with six rebounds and a steal against the Broncos.
  • McCall played 31 minutes in her hometown as she scored 12 points by making 4-of-5 three point shots and grabbed a pair of rebounds on Sunday afternoon.
  • Doing a little bit of everything in her homecoming, Ranson scored 10 points, grabbed five boards, dished out four assists and came away with a steal in Sunday's loss to Boise State.
