Late Rally Falls Short Against No. 10 UCLA in Day Two at Stacy Winsberg Tournament

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program (0-5, 0-0 WCC) nearly rallied from a seven-run deficit against No. 10 UCLA (2-1, 0-0 PAC-12) in game one, but fell 7-6 to the Bruins and 16-1 to No. 8 Texas (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED – NO. 10 UCLA 7, SAN DIEGO 6
  • The opener featured the Toreros against the host UCLA Bruins, who jumped ahead in the first inning with an RBI double to make it 1-0.
  • That lead would expand further for the Bruins, who led 5-0 after two innings and 7-0 after three innings.
  • However, the Toreros remained composed and began to generate some momentum.
  • It began when Emma Giaime took over the in the circle, where she would remain for the remainder of the game, as she helped limit the damage in the third inning and got San Diego up to bat.
  • After a Tele Jennings lead-off single, the Toreros got a spark when Michelle Delgado stepped to the plate.
  • The freshman put a charge into the second pitch she saw, blasting the ball over the left field wall for the first hit, two RBI and home run of her collegiate career to make it 7-2.
  • The next inning, the Toreros opened with an Arisa Tovar walk.
  • Tovar was lifted for Dalia Powell, who advanced to second on a Carly Ruiz bunt and to third on a UCLA error.
  • Amanda Limon stepped up and added another run, lacing a single through the right side to score Powell and make it 7-3.
  • Trailing by four runs in the seventh inning, the Toreros mounted a furious rally.
  • Ruiz opened the inning with her first collegiate hit and Mikalyn Emanuelli reached on an error.
  • After Jennings drew a walk, Giaime stepped to the plate as the tying run with the bases loaded.
  • The sophomore came through in the clutch with a two RBI single through the left side to shave the UCLA lead to 7-5.
  • Giaime and Jennings would each move up a base on a wild pitch, before Joecellia Roberts drove home Jennings on a sacrifice fly to make it 7-6.
  • With the go-ahead run at the plate, the Toreros were unable to finish off the rally, as UCLA earned a strikeout to end the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED – NO. 8 TEXAS 16, SAN DIEGO 1 (F/5)
  • Facing another top opponent just minutes after game one, the Toreros started off the game strong with two solid innings from Courtney Rose in the circle.
  • However, Texas would lead 2-0 through the first two frames.
  • The Longhorns would emerge in the third inning and ultimately put the game out of reach.
  • Despite that, the Toreros would not quit, as Shawnese Hogue-Lacy and Jennings each tallied hits in the third and fourth innings, respectively.
  • From there, San Diego got some momentum back in the fifth inning, as Roberts delivered a single, before Hogue-Lacy reached for a second time on an error.
  • After a Ruiz walk, Emanuelli was able to put a ball in play with the bases loaded and force Texas into an error with her speed, putting San Diego on the board in the final inning.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Delgado becomes the first Torero to hit a home run for her first collegiate hit since Lauren Kane on Feb. 12, 2016.
  • The six runs scored by San Diego against UCLA are the most in a single game in program history against the 12-time national champions.
  • In addition, it's the most runs ever scored by the Toreros against a top-10 team.
  • Kaitlyn Bartlow made her collegiate debut in the loss to Texas.
