Early Lead Not Enough in Season Opener at No. 16 Texas

Toreros strike first on Friday night but can't hang on to beat Longhorns in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas — Jack Costello provided an early spark on offense and Josh Randall turned in a solid start on the mound in his Torero debut, but San Diego baseball (0-1, 0-0 WCC) couldn't hang on to beat No. 16 Texas (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) on Friday, dropping a tough 7-3 decision to the Longhorns before a sold-out season-opening crowd of 7,935 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

USD got on the board first and led by a 3-1 margin in the top of the sixth inning but fell behind after UT scored five in the bottom of the frame.

Josh Randall shined in what marked just his second college appearance since 2022, scattering four hits across a career-high 4.1 innings while allowing an unearned run, walking two, and striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Costello got the scoring started in the top of the third with a two-RBI single, lacing a line drive into left field to plate both Justin DeCriscio and Ariel Armas, who each notched singles of their own to reach base.
  • Texas struck back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single of its own, plating an unearned run to cut San Diego's lead to 2-1.
  • Austin Smith answered two innings later with an infield single to second base that scored Jack Gurevitch and made the score 3-1 in the Toreros' favor.
  • The Longhorns got within a run in the bottom of the sixth on yet another RBI single, then surged ahead with a go-ahead grand slam that gave them 6-3 advantage.
  • UT plated its final run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI triple.
  • San Diego brought the tying run to the plate in each of Friday night's final three innings but could not complete a comeback.
ON THE MOUND
  • Conner Thurman was first out of the bullpen in relief of Randall and worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam to preserve his starter's final line, stranding all three runners by inducing a fielder's choice and a fly out.
  • Drake Frize allowed one run on a hit and a walk while striking out three across the game's final two innings.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Smith had a game-high three hits on Friday night.
  • Costello paced USD with a team-high three RBIs.
  • DeCriscio, Armas, and Dustin Allen all had two hits.
  • Allen, Armas, and Angelo Peraza each drew a walk.
  • Allen and Costello each stole a base.
  • San Diego left 10 runners on base.
