MALIBU, Calif. – The San Diego women's basketball program (6-18, 2-9 WCC) earned a key road victory for WCC Tournament seeding purposes, downing Pepperdine (5-20, 1-11 WCC), 69-49, on Thursday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.
Five Toreros scored in double figures, led by 15 points from
Kylie Horstmeyer and a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds for
Kasey Neubert.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After trading baskets for the first three minutes, the Toreros collectively clicked on both sides of the ball.
- San Diego went on a 13-0 run in the first quarter, to take a 17-4 lead.
- Horstmeyer added five points during the run, while the defense limited the Waves to just three field goals in the first quarter.
- The Toreros maintained the lead throughout the second quarter, as Courtney Wristen provided a spark off the bench.
- Wristen tallied five of the team's first eight points in the quarter and the Toreros held a 31-21 lead at the break.
- Pepperdine started a rally in the third quarter, shaving the Torero lead to just four with 5:44 left in the period.
- However, the Toreros delivered an emphatic punch back, going on a 15-1 run almost immediately.
- Dylan Horton was the catalyst of the run, scoring eight of the 15 points and it helped bury Pepperdine's hopes of a rally.
- Pepperdine could get no closer than 13 points, as Neubert and Horstmeyer continued to pour in points, while the defense locked down the Waves with 10 steals.

- The Toreros tallied a season-high 20 made free throws in the win.
- San Diego improves to 4-0 when four or more players score in double figures.
