Softball Drops Finale of Torero Classic to Colorado State

SAN DIEGO – Despite holding an early lead, the San Diego softball program (2-8, 0-0 WCC) came up just short against Colorado State (7-3, 0-0 MWC) falling 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED – COLORADO STATE 4, SAN DIEGO 3
  • Fresh off a terrific inning to help San Diego defeat Eastern Illinois, Courtney Rose returned to start on Sunday and came out of the gate sharp.
  • Rose generated three straight ground ball outs in the first inning and kept Colorado State off the board for the first four innings.
  • Meanwhile, the Toreros were able to give her a lead in the second inning, as Emma Giaime led off the inning with a double.
  • After a sacrifice bunt by Shawnese Hogue-Lacy to move Giaime to third, Tele Jennings drove her home with an RBI single to give San Diego a 1-0 lead.
  • Colorado State would finally get their first run in the fifth inning to tie the game, but San Diego would answer in the bottom half of the frame.
  • Much like the second inning, the Toreros led off with a double, as EJ Joyner reached to set up Amanda Limon.
  • Limon singled to the pitcher to move Joyner to third and then stole second, forcing the second baseman into a both a fielding error and a throwing error trying to catch Joyner who went home to give San Diego a 2-1 lead.
  • Later in the frame, Joecellia Roberts delivered an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 3-1.
  • However, Colorado State started a rally, scoring two runs in the sixth inning.
  • A Hogue-Lacy double in the sixth gave San Diego hopes of retaking the lead, but the Toreros stranded her at third base.
  • Colorado State would score the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and secured a win in the bottom half of the frame.
