Horton Hits 1,000 Points as Women’s Basketball Downs Saint Mary’s

SAN DIEGO Dylan Horton hit the 1,000-point threshold as part of a 69-52 win for the San Diego women's basketball program (8-19, 4-10 WCC) over Saint Mary's (12-16, 5-9 WCC) on Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Veronica Sheffey led the Toreros with 19 points and seven assists, while Kasey Neubert added a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Saint Mary's got out to a slight 7-6 lead, the Toreros answered with a 14-2 run.
  • Sheffey got off to a hot start in the opening quarter, scoring eight of the team's first 20 points to give San Diego a double-digit advantage just minutes into game.
  • The Gaels began to claw back in the second quarter, shooting over 50 percent from the field.
  • However, the Toreros were able to prevent them from getting no closer than six points back, as Neubert added five points, while Mila Wawszkowicz added some energy off the bench.
  • Early in the second half, the Gaels began to get in foul trouble, as last year's first team All-WCC honoree Ali Bamberger was particularly affected.
  • In turn, the Toreros began to assert themselves on the glass in her absence, as Neubert continued to stack up rebounds and Harsimran Kaur began to find her shot with four early points.
  • Late in the third, Horton began to find her shot, hitting a three pointer to make it 43-31.
  • Sheffey helped close out the quarter with a three pointer to give San Diego a 55-40 lead.
  • As the lead ballooned to a high of 17, all eyes turned to Horton, who was on the hunt for the 1,000-point threshold.
  • After several made free throws by Horton, she was able to secure the mark with just 1:29 left in the game, drawing a foul on a made layup and hitting the final free throw to finish with 12 points and exactly 1,000 in her career.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Neubert reached 596 rebounds in her Torero career, moving her into tenth place on the all-time rebounding list. Next up is Marta Menuez (614) in ninth.
