NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Winner of four of their last six games, including a convincing series victory against Arizona over the weekend, San Diego baseball (4-3, 0-0 WCC) is set to resume non-conference play on the road this week, traveling to the San Fernando Valley for a midweek matchup at CSUN (5-2, 0-0 Big West).

First pitch on Tuesday afternoon at Matador Field is set for 2:00 p.m., and the action will be streamed live on ESPN+.  A live audio stream of the game along with live statistics will be available on GoMatadors.com.

LAST TIME OUT
San Diego set forth a strong performance over the weekend in a series win over the Wildcats, beating Arizona 10-8 in game one and 6-4 in game two before dropping a 10-9 decision in a series finale that saw it jump out to a 6-0 lead and score twice in the bottom of the ninth inning before falling short of a sweep.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST THE MATADORS
The Toreros are 39-37-2 against the Matadors all-time, with the two teams' most recent meeting coming last season on April 25, 2023, when USD dropped a tough 7-4 decision to CSUN at Fowler Park.

San Diego last played at Matador Field earlier last year on March 28, 2023, when it suffered a 12-10 defeat to CSUN.

USD has lost each of its last four matchups against the Matadors and last beat CSUN on March 3, 2012, when it earned a 13-3 victory as part of the SDSU Invitational at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The Toreros' last road victory over the CSUN in Northridge on May 24, 2010, when it was ranked No. 15 nationally and prevailed by a 14-8 margin at Matador Field.

FOR STARTERS (PROBABLE)
Redshirt senior righty Conner Thurman will make the 11th start of his college career and his fifth appearance of 2024 when he takes the mound at Matador Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Thurman most recently pitched in San Diego's series finale against the Wildcats on Sunday, throwing a third of an inning while allowing a pair of unearned runs on a hit and an error.

So far in 2024 he is 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA across four appearances and 2.2 total innings pitched, notching two strikeouts against two walks and three total hits allowed.

As a redshirt junior in 2023 he appeared in 11 of San Diego's games on the mound, pacing the USD pitching staff with a career-low 2.61 ERA and a career-high three saves.

He posted a 1-0 record with 29 strikeouts across 20.2 innings last year, allowing only six earned runs and four walks.

Thurman — who struck out five in just two innings of work on April 28, 2023 at Loyola Marymount — recorded a strikeout in all but one of his 11 outings as a redshirt junior, including three separate appearances with five strikeouts.

He most recently started a game for USD on Sunday, May 29, 2021, throwing 6.1 innings of one-run ball at No. 18 Gonzaga as he struck out seven, walked none, and earned his sixth win of that season in what marked the Toreros' final game that year.

The Mesa, Arizona native has pitched primarily out of the bullpen since then, and threw a season-high 3.2 innings on back-to-back occasions last season (April 15 vs. Portland and April 22 vs. San Francisco) before finishing his campaign with seven outings of 2.2 innings or less.

Thurman is pursuing a master's degree in Coaching and Leadership Studies.

A ONE-MAN WRECKING CREW
Junior left-handed pitcher/outfielder Austin Smith did it all for San Diego this past weekend, batting .333 (4-for-12) across three games against Arizona while homering three times, scoring five runs, driving in seven, and walking once.

On the mound he threw 1.1 pivotal frames, striking out all four batters he faced enroute to earning a save and securing the Toreros a series win over the Wildcats.

Smith got his weekend started on Friday when he singled and scored a run, then followed up with a monster performance on Saturday night, leading USD to a dramatic comeback victory with two home runs, including a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the seventh.

After putting the Toreros back in front with his bat, he took the mound from left field with two outs and the tying run aboard in the top of the eighth and ended the inning with a clutch strikeout. Smith stayed in the game for the ninth and locked up the win by striking out the side.

On Sunday, he stayed hot by hammering a first-inning solo shot before he drew a walk and came around to score a pair of runs.
