SAN DIEGO – Behind a season-high from
Dylan Horton, the San Diego women's basketball program (5-17, 1-8 WCC) got back in the win column, defeating San Francisco (9-13, 5-4 WCC), 77-66, on Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Four Toreros went into double figures, led by Horton with 22 points.
Kylie Horstmeyer matched her career-high with 18 points, while
Veronica Sheffey added 14 points and six assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After San Francisco opened the game on a 6-0 run, the Toreros settled in and began to shoot the ball at an efficient clip.
- Harsimran Kaur tallied four of her 12 points in the first five minutes of the game and the Toreros responded with a 10-2 run.
- Horton and Horstmeyer began to form a one-two punch, as each got into a rhythm in the first quarter.
- After a Horstmeyer three-pointer, the Toreros led 17-12 at the end of the first quarter.
- The second quarter was more of the same from the Toreros, who held off some early points from the Dons and further expanded their lead.
- Horstmeyer stayed red-hot with a pair of baskets, while seven different Toreros tallied at least one field goal as the lead rose to 14.
- San Francisco would shave the lead to nine, but the Toreros would not be phased entering the third quarter.
- Horstmeyer punctuated her run of six consecutive field goals with an 'and-one' conversion to make it 49-34 with 5:59 remaining in the third.
- A 7-0 run by San Francisco got them back in the game, but ignited Horton who ended the quarter on fire.
- Horton scored seven points in a span of 1:29 to end the period and gave San Diego an 11-point advantage.
- San Francisco made one final push and cut the lead to five with just under five minutes remaining.
- However, Horton tallied another pair of baskets, while Horstmeyer added a block and a jumper to extend the lead back to 11 and secure the win.
