Women’s Basketball Travels North to Santa Clara

SAN DIEGO – Fresh off a big home victory, the San Diego women's basketball program (5-17, 1-8 WCC) heads north for a single game this week, facing Santa Clara (17-7, 5-4 WCC) on Thursday at 6 p.m., at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara, Calif.

LAST TIME OUT
  • The Toreros offense tallied one of their best shooting performances of the season to earn their first WCC win, downing San Francisco, 77-66 on Saturday afternoon.
  • Dylan Horton recorded a season-high 22 points in the win, while Kylie Horstmeyer matched a career-high with 18 points.
  • Four players went into double figures in total, as the Toreros shot a season-high 55.2 percent from the field.

OPPONENT HISTORY
  • San Diego holds a tight, 44-40 edge in the all-time series, winning the last meeting late last season.
  • The Toreros won an overtime thriller, 69-62, at Santa Clara, behind huge games from Ayanna Khalfani and Kasey Neubert.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • Horton and Neubert are on the chase for 1,000 points in their collegiate careers, as both will have tight finishes for the milestone.
  • Horton (946) needs 54 more points, while Neubert (865) needs 135.
  • A key determining factor for the success of the Toreros is the disbursement of scoring, as the team has won all of their games when at least three or more players score in double figures.
  • Sheffey ranks third in the WCC and 40th in the nation in assists (111) and third in the WCC and 43rd nationally in assists per game (5.0).
  • Her start in the assist category is potentially historic, as only two Toreros have ever averaged over five assists per game over a full season (Amanda Rego (twice) and Lori Morris).
  • In addition, Sheffey continues to rank among the top five in the WCC in free throw attempts, made free throws and free throw percentage.
  • Neubert continues to average a double-double per game and has eight over 16 games this season. She ranks 44th nationally and third in the WCC in double-doubles.
  • Neubert also ranks second in the WCC and 25th in the nation in rebounds per game (10.0), as well as third in the conference in total rebounds (170).
  • Harsimran Kaur ranks third in the WCC in blocks per game (1.18) and total blocks (26).

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Head coach Cindy Fisher is closing in on 400 wins in her career, standing at 394 between San Diego and Wyoming.
  • Sheffey needs 13 more assists to enter the single season top-10 at San Diego in total assists.
  • The Toreros rank second in the WCC in steals per game (8.4) and offensive rebounds per game (12.9).
  • Four of the team's five wins have come when the Toreros shoot over 50 percent from the field as a unit.
