SAN DIEGO – The No. 14 San Diego men's tennis program (12-2, 1-0 WCC) advanced to the final of the Ed Collins Spring Classic, downing South Florida (9-10, 0-0 AAC), 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After meeting the Bulls earlier this year at Chowderfest, the Toreros faced South Florida again and jumped out to similar results as their successful meeting this past fall.
- Sacchitt Sharrma and Iiro Vasa took an early advantage and the Toreros would earn the doubles point shortly thereafter.
- The visitors would respond in singles, as the Toreros were only able to take the opening set in four of the six singles matches.
- However, the depth of the Toreros shined brightly, as No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles all expanded their leads.
- Neo Niedner made it a 2-0 week in singles by cruising to a 6-3, 6-2 win and Savriyan Danilov added another victory to make it 3-0.
- While South Florida was able to get on the board with a win on court three, the Toreros remained composed and closed out the match.
- Sharrma would be the one to clinch the Torero win with a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
NEXT UP
- The Toreros will play for the title in the Ed Collins Spring Classic, hosting No. 22 Arizona State for a rematch on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., at the Hogan Tennis Center.
