LAST TIME OUT - Costello, Gurevitch Punctuate Power Surge in 13-5 Win Over Titans
• A nine-run sixth inning that featured a pair of massive home runs from
Jack Gurevitch highlighted another offensive eruption for San Diego baseball on Tuesday night, leading it past Cal State Fullerton by a 13-5 margin at Fowler Park.
• Gurevitch led off the game's pivotal sixth frame with a towering solo shot to right field that landed atop the Manchester Village Apartments. Eight batters later he sent an opposite-field two run shot to left, and by the end of the inning USD scored nearly 10 times on six hits and two Fullerton errors.
• But even after the sophomore first baseman's stirring sixth-inning power display, it was
Jack Costello who paced the Torero offense against the Titans, notching a game-high four RBIs by hammering a first-inning grand slam.
• The offensive barrage complemented strong appearances out of the Torero bullpen from
Alex Schrier,
Dallin Harrison,
Conner Thurman, and
Chase Minor, who teamed up for five scoreless frames across the contest's middle innings.
Notable:
• Gurevitch had three RBIs, scored three runs, and drew a walk on Tuesday night.
• Costello scored three runs of his own to tie Gurevitch for the game high.
•
Justin DeCriscio was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
•
Angelo Peraza,
Dustin Allen,
Will Worthington, and
Jakob Christian all drove in a run.
• Allen drew a team-high two free passes, and was joined by four other teammates who worked a walk.
• In total, seven different Toreros drove in a run against CSUF.
• Tuesday night's win earned USD a sweep in its season series against Cal State Fullerton.
•
Ryan Kysar's three innings pitched and four strikeouts on Tuesday were both game highs.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST PACIFIC
• The Toreros are 25-8 all-time against the Tigers, and have won 10 of their last 12 matchups with Pacific dating back to May 2019.
• USD and UOP most recently met last season, when San Diego took two of three from the Tigers from March 17-19, 2023 at Fowler Park.
• San Diego won the first two games by scores of 9-3 and 16-9 before dropping the finale by a 5-2 margin.
• Prior to that loss in game three against Pacific last season, USD had won nine games in a row against the Tigers.
FOR STARTERS (PROBABLE)
THURSDAY: Left-hander
Austin Smith will make his eighth pitching appearance and third start of the season when he takes the mound for the Toreros in Thursday's series opener at Pacific.
• Smith, an El Cajon, California native who attended nearby Granite Hills High School and transferred to USD from UC San Diego, has posted a 1-0 record and a 6.60 ERA across 15 innings so far in 2024 while striking out 18 and walking 11.
• He most recently pitched last Friday in game one of the Toreros' doubleheader against Saint Mary's, allowing three runs on six hits across four innings while walking two and striking out four.
• Smith — a 2023 All-WCC Second Team selection — has shined out of the San Diego bullpen this season, notching a team-high two saves.
FRIDAY: Right-hander
Josh Randall (0-2, 1.85 ERA) is set to start game two for the Toreros against the Tigers.
• He most recently pitched in game two of San Diego's doubleheader against Saint Mary's last Friday, surrendering a run on four hits and a walk while striking out five.
• Across 24.1 innings and five starts in 2024 he has struck out 30 batters, walked only nine, and held opposing hitters to a .215 average.
• Randall, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound junior from San Juan Capistrano, California, transferred to USD from Arizona, where he spent his freshman and sophomore seasons
• He made 14 relief appearances during his true freshman campaign in 2022, compiling a 1-0 record and 15 strikeouts while limiting opposing hitters to a .231 batting average.
• As a sophomore in 2023, he was limited to just one pitching appearance due to injury.
• Randall brings postseason experience to the Torero rotation, having thrown three innings for the Wildcats in the 2022 NCAA Coral Gables Regional against Ole Miss.
• On January 26, he was tabbed as the 2024 Perfect Game Preseason WCC Pitcher of the Year.
SATURDAY: Reigning WCC Pitcher of the Week
Calvin Schapira will start for a fourth consecutive weekend when he toes the rubber for USD in the series finale on Saturday afternoon.
• Schapira, who attended USC (2019), Central Arizona College (2020), and Purdue (2021-2023) before transferring to USD as a graduate student this year, has compiled a 3-0 record and a 3.16 ERA across seven appearances (three starts) and 25.2 innings pitched in 2024.

• Schapira most recently pitched last Saturday against Saint Mary's, throwing seven strong innings that saw him allow just two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out nine.
• His seven innings pitched that afternoon marked the longest outing by a Torero pitcher so far this season, and his nine strikeouts are one shy of USD's individual game high in 2024 (
Josh Randall, 10).
• For his efforts against the Gaels he was named the WCC Pitcher of the Week on Monday, marking the first time a Torero has taken home the award since April 2022.
CALVIN SCHAPIRA NAMED WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
• Graduate student
Calvin Schapira has been named the WCC Pitcher of the Week for March 25, 2024, the West Coast Conference announced on Monday afternoon.
• With San Diego looking to stave off its first WCC sweep since 2018, Schapira stepped up and delivered the Toreros' strongest start of the season thus far, silencing Saint Mary's by allowing just two runs across seven innings as USD rolled to a big 16-2 win at Fowler Park.
• Schapira (3-0) surrendered just two hits and two walks on Saturday evening, and struck out a season-high nine before earning his third win of the season as he turned in the longest outing of any San Diego pitcher in 2024.
• The left-hander's nine strikeouts are a USD career high, and are the second-most by a Torero in a single game this year.
• Monday's recognition marks the first WCC award of Schapira's career, and San Diego's first WCC Pitcher of the Week selection since April 18, 2022 (Brycen Mautz).
