LAST TIME OUT - Toreros Dominate Aztecs in Rivalry Win at Tony Gwynn Stadium
• A six-run eighth inning featuring a pair of three-run homers from
Angelo Peraza and
Jack Costello powered San Diego to a commanding 9-2 win over San Diego State on Tuesday night, earning the Toreros a second consecutive victory as they dominated their crosstown rival.
• A strong start on the mound from
Ryan Kysar set the stage for USD's late-game surge before
Ivran Romero,
Conner Thurman,
Drake Frize, and
Vaughn Mauterer combined to strike out eight across five shutout frames out of the bullpen to end the game.
• Along with his decisive blow in the eighth inning, Peraza paced the Torero offense by going 3-for-4 from the plate while ripping an RBI double, scoring three runs, and drawing a walk.
Notable:
• Peraza's stellar performance from the plate was complemented by big nights from Costello and Gurevitch, who went 1-for-3 and 2-for-5 respectively, while combining for five RBIs.
• Peraza's four RBIs at San Diego State on Tuesday matches his RBI total through the first 10 games of the 2024 season.
•
Dustin Allen drew three walks and scored a run in San Diego's win over the Aztecs.
• Neither team led by more than a run through Tuesday's first seven innings, and the game ultimately featured two ties and two lead changes.
• Head coach
Brock Ungricht has now won three of his first four matchups against his alma mater (San Diego State) since taking the helm for San Diego in 2022.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST DBU
• The Toreros are 2-4 against the Patriots all-time, with the two teams' most recent meetings taking place on March 4th, 5th, and 6th, 2022 in a wild three-game series at Fowler Park. All six of USD and DBU's previous matchups were in San Diego.
• San Diego took one of three games from DBU that weekend, winning the series opener by a score of 9-8 in walk-off fashion after then-sophomore
Kevin Sim turned in a 5-for-5 performance at the plate with two runs scored, a stolen base, two home runs, and seven runs batted in.
• Sim, who grew up in San Diego and was selected out of USD by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fifth round (148th overall pick) of the 2023 MLB Draft, homered in the second, singled in the fourth and sixth, homered again in the eighth, then delivered a bases-clearing walk-off double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to deliver the victory that night.
• Though the Toreros fell 8-6 in game two, the second matchup between Dallas Baptist and San Diego in 2022 was nearly as memorable as the first one.
• Sim and current Toreros
Dustin Allen and
Jack Costello homered in a game that was moved from night to day to avoid inclement weather, and then-sophomore lefty Brycen Mautz struck out a remarkable 15 batters on the mound.
• Mautz, also a San Diego native who went on to be selected out of USD by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round (59th overall pick) of the 2022 MLB Draft, gave up six home runs that afternoon but struck out the side in the top of the first inning en-route to fanning every DBU starter at least once.
• His 15 strikeouts against Dallas Baptist on March 5, 2022 remain the most by a USD player in a single game since 2010, and were one shy of the San Diego program record of 16, which dates back to 2008.
• Mautz, who pitched in Single-A last season, is currently ranked No. 21 on MLB.com's list of top Cardinals prospects.
FOR STARTERS (PROBABLE)
FRIDAY: Right-hander
Josh Randall (0-1, 1.17 ERA) will make his fourth career appearance (and fourth straight Friday-night start) for San Diego when he toes the rubber in game one at Horner Ballpark.
• He most recently appeared last Friday at No. 20 UC Irvine, when he tossed six innings while surrendering two runs on six hits and striking out four.
• The two earned runs he allowed at UCI last week are the only ones he's surrendered thus far in 2024 across a team-high 15.1 innings pitched.
• He is holding opposing batters to a .217 average and has walked just five batters this year against a team-best 21 strikeouts.
• Randall, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound junior from San Juan Capistrano, California, transferred to USD from Arizona, where he spent his freshman and sophomore seasons
• He made 14 relief appearances during his true freshman campaign in 2022, compiling a 1-0 record and 15 strikeouts while limiting opposing hitters to a .231 batting average.
• As a sophomore in 2023, he was limited to just one pitching appearance due to injury.
• Randall brings postseason experience to the Torero rotation, having thrown three innings for the Wildcats in the 2022 NCAA Coral Gables Regional against Ole Miss.
• On January 26, he was tabbed as the 2024 Perfect Game Preseason WCC Pitcher of the Year.
SATURDAY: Left-hander
Calvin Schapira (1-0, 2.00 ERA) will make his first start in a San Diego uniform when he takes the mound in game two at DBU.
• Schapira, who attended USC (2019), Central Arizona College (2020), and Purdue (2021-2023) before transferring to USD as a graduate student this year, has recorded four appearances and 9.0 innings pitched for the Toreros so far in 2024, all out of the bullpen.
• He has struck out 14 batters, allowed just two earned runs, and walked just two so far this season while holding opposing batters to a minuscule .129 average.
• Schapira most recently pitched last Sunday (March 3) against Michigan at Dodger Stadium as part of the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic, entering in relief of starter
Logan Reddemann in the bottom of the seventh inning before throwing 1.2 scoreless frames while allowing a hit, striking out one, and walking none.
• His longest outing in 2024 is three innings, which he reached in his first two appearances of the year at No. 16 Texas (February 17) and against Arizona (February 23). He did not allow a run on either occasion, and struck out a season-high eight while walking none against the Wildcats.
• He pitched a pair of complete games as a sophomore at Central Arizona College, and while with Purdue set a Division I career high with seven innings of one-run ball at Minnesota on May 20, 2021.
• Schapira missed the Boilermakers' 2022 season due to injury (Tommy John surgery) and made six appearances while totaling 13.2 innings as a redshirt senior in 2023.
SUNDAY: True freshman righty Logan Reddeman (1-0, 3.86 ERA) will start for a fourth consecutive weekend when he pitches the series finale for USD on Sunday afternoon.
• Reddemann most recently pitched last Sunday (March 3) against Michigan at Dodger Stadium, when he earned his first college win after holding the Wolverines to just one run across a career-high six innings while walking one, striking out one, and surrendering only three hits.
• He has struck out 11 batters in 2024 against four walks and is holding opposing batters to a .240 batting average. His 14.0 total innings pitched this season are the second-most on the San Diego roster, behind only Randall.

BEST IN THE WEST (COAST CONFERENCE)
• From the beginning of the 2019 season until now, no baseball team in the West Coast Conference has compiled a better overall win/loss record than San Diego.
