Rose Tosses One-Hitter in Softball’s Shutout of LMU

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program (13-28, 1-0 WCC) opened their West Coast Conference slate with a bang, downing LMU (17-19, 0-1 WCC), 4-0 on Friday evening at the USD Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED – SAN DIEGO 4, LMU 0
  • Following her dominant performance against California Baptist on Apr. 2, Courtney Rose one-upped it on Friday in the conference opener.
  • Rose worked around a first-inning walk and a second inning walk and single to keep the game scoreless at 0-0.
  • While the Toreros tallied two singles in the first inning and a single and walk in the second inning, the Toreros were able to break through in the third inning.
  • After walks by Joecellia Roberts and Tele Jennings, Arisa Tovar would reach on an error to load the bases with one out.
  • A grounder by Mikalyn Emanuelli drove in the game's first run, as the Lions second baseman airmailed the throw and allowed the Toreros to lead 1-0.
  • EJ Joyner extended the lead later in the inning, hitting an RBI single through the left side to make it 2-0.
  • Rose would continue to roll, as she picked up a strikeout in the fourth inning, while keeping the Lions off the bases.
  • San Diego would tack on some insurance in the sixth inning, as they quickly filled the base paths.
  • Carly Ruiz walked, Amanda Limon singled and Roberts delivered a surprise bunt single to load the bases with one out.
  • Jennings delivered yet another clutch base-hit, powering a single up the middle to score two runs and extend the lead to 4-0.
  • That would be all that Rose needed, as she got the last three outs in quick succession, to finish off a stretch of 16 consecutive outs.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • With five strikeouts, Rose (324) moved into sole possession of fourth on the Toreros all-time strikeout list, passing Megan Sabbatini (322).
  • Roberts extended her hitting streak to 10 consecutive games in the win.
  • The Toreros tallied at least one hit in every single inning off reigning WCC Pitcher of the Year Jenna Perez.
