No. 18 Men’s Tennis Wins WCC Tournament

SAN DIEGO – The No. 18 San Diego men's tennis program (22-3, 7-1 WCC) rallied from a doubles point loss to down No. 39 Pepperdine (14-11, 7-1 WCC), 4-1 and win the 2024 WCC Tournament on Saturday at the Aztec Tennis Center.

The Toreros take home their first WCC Tournament title since 2022 and complete a sweep of the regular season and tournament titles, while locking their place in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the third consecutive WCC Tournament final against the Waves, the tensions were high from the beginning.
  • Sacchitt Sharrma and Iiro Vasa found early momentum at the top doubles position, jumping out to an early break.
  • While the duo would go on to win, Pepperdine secured a late break on court two and secured the doubles point for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Toreros rallied together at the break and came out of the gate with fire in singles.
  • San Diego jumped all over the Waves, winning five of the six opening sets.
  • Oliver Tarvet and Vasa stormed out to dominant 6-1 showings against their ranked opponents.
  • Despite some second set pressure, Vasa would clinch his match promptly to make it 1-1.
  • As the matches waned on, Tarvet, Stian Klaassen and Savriyan Danilov all closed in on wins.
  • Klaassen responded from an early second set break to win four straight games and secure his match in straight sets.
  • From there Tarvet and Danilov finished just seconds apart, as Danilov earned the clinching point following the official's overrule of an out call to secure the match.
  • With the victory, the Toreros secured their ninth WCC Tournament title.

NEXT UP
  • The Toreros have secured their third consecutive spot in the NCAA Tournament and will await their placement following the national selection show on Monday, Apr. 29.
