SETTING THE STAGE
• San Diego (20-4) enters the weekend as the tournament's No.1 seed and after receiving a first-round bye will take on four-seed Gonzaga (20-30, 14-10 WCC) in the second round at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.

LAST TIME OUT - San Diego Wins 2024 WCC Regular-Season Championship
• A dominant, focused effort on both sides of the ball led San Diego baseball to the outright 2024 West Coast Conference Regular-Season Championship on May 12, beating San Francisco by a 7-2 margin at Benedetti Diamond to earn the regular-season crown for the first time since 2015.

• Highlighted by Jakob Christian's 22nd home run of 2024, all nine Toreros starters notched a hit in the series finale, including four with two or more.

• Left-hander Austin Smith turned in a solid outing for USD on the mound, starting the game with five innings of one run ball that saw him scatter three hits, work around four walks, and strike out three.

• San Diego had clinched at least a share of the regular-season conference title on Saturday afternoon, but sealed sole possession of the 2024 championship by sweeping the Dons in Sunday's series finale.

Notable:
• Smith picked up the win to move to 5-0 in 2024.

• Christian, Peraza, Armas, and Costello all had multiple hits on Sunday.

• Christian and Costello both scored two runs, while Peraza and Christian both drove in a pair apiece.

• Smith was 1-for-4 with a walk to complement his solid start on the mound.

• San Diego finished its 2024 schedule on a seven-game win streak and with four consecutive WCC sweeps.

• USD has now won 26 of its last 29 games.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST GONZAGA
• The Toreros are 56-44-1 against the Bulldogs all-time, with the two teams' most recent meeting coming earlier this season from April 26-28, 2024, when San Diego swept Gonzaga at Fowler Park. USD prevailed by a close 5-4 decision in game one that weekend, and dominated in games two and three with 14-2 and 19-0 decisions.

• San Diego last played Gonzaga away from home last season from April 6-8, 2023, when it took two of three from the Bulldogs at the Patterson Baseball Complex in Spokane. USD took the first game of the series 8-1, before dropping game two by a 3-2 decision, and prevailing in the rubber match in game three 9-3 decision that weekend.

• USD last played the Zags in the WCC Tournament in its 2022 championship run, when it defeated the top-seeded Bulldogs in back-to-back games to win the WCC Tournament at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, California, winning by a 5-3 decision in game one, followed by a 15-12 extra-inning thriller in the if-necessary game two to secure the Championship.

FOR STARTERS (PROBABLE)
THURSDAY: After starting on the mound for the Toreros' last four series finales, Austin Smith (5-0, 2.93 ERA) is set to make the start on the mound for Thursday's tournament matchup, where he will make his eighth start, and sixteenth overall pitching appearance of 2024.

• He last pitched in the Toreros' series finale against San Francisco on May 12, when he threw five strong innings that saw him allow just one earned run on three hits, walk four, and strike out three.

•  Smith is one save behind Conner Thurman for the USD lead with three total saves, and has given up just nineteen total runs across 46 total innings, and has struck out 44 total batters while walking 25.

• In addition to dominating on the mound, Smith has also batted in all 50 games so far for USD, primarily as a designated hitter, but has also seen time in left field.

• At the plate he has put together a .311/.425/.486 slash line with 36 RBIs and seven home runs, which is tied with Jack Costello for the third-most on the Torero roster.

• A flurry of awards capped a dominant regular season for San Diego baseball this week, with Brock Ungricht named the WCC Coach of the Year, Jakob Christian named the WCC Player of the Year, Logan Reddemann named the WCC Freshman of the Year, and Ariel Armas named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year alongside four All-WCC First Team selections, four All-WCC Second Team selections, two All-WCC Honorable Mentions, and one All-WCC Freshman Team selection. The West Coast Conference made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon.

• Armas, Christian, Reddemann, and Austin Smith earned All-WCC First Team honors, Jack Gurevitch, Josh Randall, Conner Thurman, and Will Worthington were named to the All-WCC Second Team, Jack Costello and Justin Decriscio took home All-WCC Honorable Mentions, and Reddemann was named to the All-WCC Freshman Team.

• For Ungricht, it's his first career WCC Coach of the Year honor after being promoted to become the Toreros' head coach prior to the 2022 season. In his three regular-season campaigns at the helm in San Diego he has steered USD to a 98-58-1 (.627) record, three consecutive WCC Tournament appearances, two WCC Championships (2022 Tournament and 2024 Regular-Season), and a win in an NCAA Regional (June 3, 2022 over Vanderbilt). Under his guidance, two Toreros have been named the WCC Player of the Year and 34 total USD players have earned All-WCC honors.

• His selection marks the seventh WCC Coach of the Year selection in San Diego baseball history after USD Athletics Hall of Famer John Cunningham earned the honor in 1993 and 1998 and Rich Hill was recognized in 2002, 2007, 2008, and 2010.

• Christian, a junior outfielder, is the 12th WCC Player of the Year in San Diego baseball history and the Toreros' first since 2022, when catcher Caleb Ricketts earned the award. He is the third USD player to be selected since 2021 (Thomas Luevano).

• After transferring to San Diego prior to the 2024 season from nearby Point Loma Nazarene — where he was named the 2023 Division II CCA Ron Lenz Player of the Year — he turned in USD's most dominant offensive season since 2013, drawing comparisons to Torero Legend Kris Bryant after batting .362 (63-for-174) with 52 runs scored, 14 doubles, 22 home runs, 58 runs batted in, 23 walks, eight hit by pitches, an .822 slugging percentage, and a .456 on-base percentage while playing in 45 of his team's 50 games and making 44 starts in 2024.

• The San Diego, California native put together four multi home run games, 20 multi-hit games, 16 multi-RBI games, an 11-game hit streak, and a 24-game on base streak while homering in 13 of USD's 24 conference games this season.

• Tuesday's Player of the Year honor is the first career end-of-year conference accolade for Christian, who was named WCC Player of the Week twice this season.

• Armas earned his first career All-WCC First Team selection and WCC Defensive Player of the Year honor after setting forth a junior campaign that saw him shine on both sides of the ball, providing elite defense behind the plate while batting .301 (52-for-173) with 32 runs scored, six doubles, six home runs, 25 runs batted in, 23 walks, six hit by pitches, a .439 slugging percentage, and a .399 on-base percentage.

• He is the first Torero to be named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year since the award was introduced in 2008.

• Armas started 49 of the Toreros' 50 games at catcher in 2024, posting a .998 fielding percentage while throwing out 13 would-be base stealers and leading the nation with 17.64 Defensive Runs Saved, 3.45 more runs saved than the next closest player.

• The Chula Vista, California native's numbers were even more robust in WCC Play, as he batted .364 (32-for-88) with 19 runs scored, three doubles, four home runs, 16 runs batted in, 15 walks, two hit by pitches, a .534 slugging percentage, and a .462 slugging percentage.

• Across 13 appearances and 11 starts, and 67.1 innings pitched he posted a 7-3 record with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP, striking out 57 against only 17 walks.

• Within WCC play he was even better, posting a 6-2 record across eight appearances, six starts and 47 innings pitched with a 1.72 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP while striking out 44 and walking nine.

• Smith, who was named a semifinalist for the 2024 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award and the 2024 Dick Howser Trophy, earned an All-WCC First Team selection after dominating both at the plate and on the mound in 2024. He posted a 5-0 record, three saves, a 2.93 ERA, and 44 strikeouts across 46 innings pitched, eight relief appearances, and seven starts while batting .311 (57-for-183) with 39 runs scored, 11 doubles, seven home runs, 36 RBIs, and 13 hit by pitches alongside a .486 slugging percentage and a .425 on-base percentage.

• This is the first career WCC award for Randall, who transferred to USD from Arizona prior to the 2024 season.

• Thurman received an All-WCC Second Team nod after setting forth his most dominant college season in 2024, compiling a 4-0 record, four saves, and a minuscule 1.02 ERA across 26 appearances, one start, and 35.1 innings pitched while striking out 44, walking only 10 BB, and holding opposing hitters to a measly .140 batting average.
