SETTING THE STAGE
• San Diego enters the weekend as the regional's No. 2 seed and will take on three-seed Oregon (37-18, 19-11 PAC-12) in its first game at 12:00 p.m. on Friday.

• USD has won 10 consecutive games and has prevailed in 29 of its last 32 contests.

• The Toreros' 2024 NCAA Regional berth marks the 10th time in program history that USD has appeared in a regional after also doing so in 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2022.

• San Diego won a game in the 2022 NCAA Corvallis Regional, upending Vanderbilt by a score of 3-2 at Goss Stadium on June 3, 2022.

• USD's 2024 WCC Tournament Championship is the third in program history (2013 and 2022).

• San Diego's 2024 WCC Regular-Season Championship is the seventh in program history and the team's first since 2015.

• 40 wins so far in 2024 is tied for the third-most in USD baseball history and is the program's most since 2012, when it went 40-17 (.702) and reached an NCAA Regional but was eliminated after two games.

• San Diego went 44-17 (.721) in 2008 and reached the championship game of the NCAA Long Beach Regional, but fell short of the program's first Super Regional appearance after dropping a 5-1 decision to Fresno State.

LAST TIME OUT - Toreros Win 2024 WCC Baseball Tournament Championship
• San Diego baseball capped off a dominating 2024 West Coast Conference campaign last Saturday (May 25) with a hard-fought win over No. 2 Portland (37-19, 19-6 WCC) to secure the title of West Coast Conference Tournament Champions for the second time since 2022, defeating the Pilots 8-6 at Las Vegas ballpark to earn its tenth consecutive victory.

• After the Pilots maintained an early 1-0 lead through the first three frames, a monster five-run fourth inning gave USD a lead that sustained multiple comeback attempts from Portland, keeping the Toreros in front for the remainder of the game thanks to a pair of insurance runs from Jack Costello and Dustin Allen in the top of the ninth inning.

• True freshman righty Logan Reddemann started on the mound in quite possibly the biggest game of his young San Diego career, and turned in 4.2 strong innings before leaning on a trio of veteran bullpen performances from Calvin Schapira, Alex Schrier, and Conner Thurman who kept the Pilots from taking the lead, and secured the championship for USD.

Notable:
• Schapira picked up his fifth win of 2024 on the mound, moving his record to 5-1 on the season.

• The three and four hitters for San Diego — Christian and Smith — went 2-for-5 and 2-for-4 respectively.

• The bottom of the USD batting order continued to be instrumental in Saturday's victory, as the seven, eight, and nine hitters for the Toreros — DeCriscio, Allen, and Worthington — combined for four of their team's eight total RBIs, with a pair of runs scored.

• Thurman earned his fifth save of 2024 on Saturday afternoon.

• San Diego recorded its tenth straight victory as well as its 18th win in its last 19 games.

Justin DeCriscio, Angelo Peraza, Ivran Romero, and Austin Smith were all named to the 2024 WCC Baseball All-Tournament Team.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST OREGON
• The Toreros are 5-11 against the Ducks all-time, with the two teams' most recent meeting coming last season from March 2-5, 2023, when San Diego dropped a four-game series to eventual PAC-12 champions Oregon at PK Park. USD fell by scores of 3-2, 4-3, 13-0, and 5-1 that weekend.

• San Diego last played Oregon at home two seasons ago, from February 18-21, 2022, when it took three of four from the Ducks at Fowler Park. USD took the first three games of the series 8-1, 10-4, and 5-4, before falling in the series finale by a high-scoring 21-11 decision. The Toreros were two innings away from a four-game sweep that weekend, holding an 11-9 eighth-inning lead that slipped away in the Monday finale.

FOR STARTERS (PROBABLE)
FRIDAY: Right-hander Josh Randall (4-2, 3.74 ERA) is set to start on Friday for the Toreros against the Ducks at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

• He most recently pitched San Diego's third round matchup in the West Coast Conference tournament against Portland last weekend (which was the Toreros' second game of the event due to receiving a first-round BYE, and allowed four earned runs on nine hits through six total innings on the hill, striking out and walking two.

• Across 67.1 innings and 13 starts in 2024 he has struck out a team-high 78 batters, walked 27, and held opposing hitters to a .222 average.

• Randall, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound junior from San Juan Capistrano, California, transferred to USD from Arizona, where he spent his freshman and sophomore seasons.

• He made 14 relief appearances during his true freshman campaign in 2022, compiling a 1-0 record and 15 strikeouts while limiting opposing hitters to a .231 batting average.

• As a sophomore in 2023, he was limited to just one pitching appearance due to injury.

• Randall brings postseason experience to the Torero rotation, having thrown three innings for the Wildcats in the 2022 NCAA Coral Gables Regional against Ole Miss.

• On January 26, he was tabbed as the 2024 Perfect Game Preseason WCC Pitcher of
the Year.

In his three regular-season campaigns at the helm in San Diego he has steered USD to a 98-58-1 (.627) record, three consecutive WCC Tournament appearances, two WCC Championships (2022 Tournament and 2024 Regular-Season), and a win in an NCAA Regional (June 3, 2022 over Vanderbilt). Under his guidance, two Toreros have been named the WCC Player of the Year and 34 total USD players have earned All-WCC honors.

• His selection marks the seventh WCC Coach of the Year selection in San Diego baseball history after USD Athletics Hall of Famer John Cunningham earned the honor in 1993 and 1998 and Rich Hill was recognized in 2002, 2007, 2008, and 2010.

• After transferring to San Diego prior to the 2024 season from nearby Point Loma Nazarene — where he was named the 2023 Division II CCA Ron Lenz Player of the Year — he turned in USD's most dominant offensive season since 2013, drawing comparisons to Torero Legend Kris Bryant after batting .362 (63-for-174) with 52 runs scored, 14 doubles, 22 home runs, 58 runs batted in, 23 walks, eight hit by pitches, an .822 slugging percentage, and a .456 on-base percentage while playing in 45 of his team's 50 regular-season games and making 44 starts in 2024.

• Tuesday's Player of the Year honor is the first career end-of-year conference accolade for Christian, who was named WCC Player of the Week twice this season.

Armas earned his first career All-WCC First Team selection and WCC Defensive Player of the Year honor after setting forth a junior campaign that saw him shine on both sides of the ball, providing elite defense behind the plate while batting .301 (52-for-173) with 32 runs scored, six doubles, six home runs, 25 runs batted in, 23 walks, six hit by pitches, a .439 slugging percentage, and a .399 on-base percentage.
