SAN DIEGO – Following a historic 2024 campaign, the San Diego women's tennis program has taken home three end-of-year awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, as the organization announced their southwest region honors on Wednesday.
Â
Assistant coach
Jordan Angus was named the ITA's Southwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year, while
Claudia De Las Heras was selected as the region's Most Improved Player and
Elizabeth Goldsmith was tabbed as the region's Senior of the Year.
Â
All three earn their first such honors by the ITA. Angus continues the tremendous coaching success set in place by legendary coach
Sherri Stephens, joining current head coach
Nadia Abdala as a winner of the award. Abdala took home the award in 2021, 2019 and 2016.
Â
Angus played a key leadership for the Toreros in what became a historic campaign that saw the team reach a program-high No. 12 in the nation. Angus took over in place of Abdala for part of the season while Abdala went on maternity leave and helped guide the Toreros through a highly challenging schedule and much of conference play.
Â
De Las Heras earns the first such honor in program history, following a dynamic season at the top of the lineup for the Toreros, going 20-9 in singles play and 14-11 in doubles. De Las Heras was named All-WCC First Team for the first time in her budding collegiate career, while navigating a grueling schedule at the top singles position, facing 11 ranked opponents.
Â
A model of consistency throughout her career, Goldsmith delivered her best campaign yet in her final season, leading the team with 23 singles wins. Goldsmith went 23-13 in singles overall and turned in a team-best 17-12 record in doubles. Goldsmith earned All-WCC First Team honors in singles and All-WCC Second Team honors in doubles and finishes her career as one of the winningest and most decorated Toreros in program history.
