Kennedy Osunsanmi erupted for 14 kills as San Diego volleyball raced to an early lead over Hawaii on Saturday night, but the Toreros (0-2, 0-0 WCC) couldn't hang on as the Rainbow Wahine (2-0, 0-0 Big West) rallied to earn a 3-1 victory before a crowd of 5,968 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
After USD won the first set 25-11, Hawaii took the next three by scores of 25-16, 25-22, and 25-20.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set – San Diego, 25-11
- The Toreros began with a dominant 7-1 lead, fueled by a five-point service run from Madi Allen, which featured consecutive aces and forced a Rainbow Wahine timeout.
- 3 kills from Haylee Stoner and back-to-back aces from Kennedy Osunsanmi kept the momentum with USD as the score reached 13-3
- The Toreros kept their foot on the gas with kills from Osunsanmi and Isabel Clark and forced a Rainbow Wahine timeout at 19-6
- A few Torero service errors led the Rainbow Wahine to reach double digit points at 24-11, but Ella Durham sealed the set with a kill and earned her team a 1-0 lead in the match.
- The Toreros outhit the Rainbow Wahine .450 to -0.200 and outscored 17-3.
Second Set – Hawaii, 25-16
- San Diego stayed close with Hawaii as Sunday evening's second set got started, resulting in a 5-5 tie early on.
- A 3-0 scoring run from the Rainbow Wahine forced a Toreros timeout at 7-11.
- San Diego struggled to find its mark on offense down the stretch, giving Hawaii a series of points on wavering defensive efforts and attack errors.
- Offensive errors from Hawaii brought the score to 16-23, but the Toreros got no closer as Hawaii finished the set, 25-16.
Third Set – Hawaii, 25-22
- Things remained close again with another 5-5 start early on in the set.
- Despite a 3-point service run, including an ace from Stoner that gave the Toreros a 9-6 lead, the Rainbow Wahine rallied back to get the score to an 11-11 tie
- Kills from Stoner, Osunsanmi, Clark, and Durham helped bring the Toreros to a 2-point lead at 18-15
- A 7-0 service run from Hawaii brought the score back in the Rainbow Wahine's favor at 22-19
- Despite kills from Kristen Erland and Clark and an ace from Kylie Munday, the Rainbow Wahine finished the first set 25-22.
Fourth Set – Hawaii, 25-20
- Although USD started set four with a promising 8-4 lead, Hawaii was able to rally back to tie things up to 10-10
- San Diego and Hawaii kept things close throughout the stretch, but Hawaii eventually found their offensive groove, leading the set 22-17
- A pair of service errors from the Toreros gave the Rainbow Wahine the advantage they needed to finish the set the 25-20

- Osunsanmi led the Toreros in kills and hitting percentage with 14 kills on a .464 hitting percentage while setting a new career high in both categories
- Clark chipped in 11 kills, 5 digs, 2 block assists and 1 assist.
- Allen led the Toreros with 12 digs
- Stoner recorded 6 kills while hitting .364
- The Toreros totaled for 7 service aces, including 2 each from Osunsanmi and Allen and 1 each from Munday, Stoner, and Bennett
