Isabel Clark and
Kennedy Osunsanmi combined for 22 kills in their college debuts as San Diego volleyball pushed SMU to a fourth set late Saturday night, but the Toreros could not overcome the Mustangs at Stan Sheriff Center, dropping a tough 3-1 decision in their 2024 season opener as part of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic.
Clark paced USD (0-1, 0-0 WCC) with a double-double that saw her rack up 12 kills, 12 digs, two service aces, and two block assists. Osunsanmi and sophomore outside hitter
Ella Durham added 10 kills apiece.
San Diego led by an 18-14 margin late in the first set before SMU dealt it a setback by rallying for a last-chance surge to take the opening frame 26-24.
Chasing 2-0 in the match after the Mustangs (1-0, 0-0 ACC) prevailed in the second set by a 25-16 margin, USD forced a decisive fourth set by winning the third frame 25-19.
SMU recovered quickly, and dealt the Toreros a tough season-opening defeat when it cruised to a 25-11 win in the fourth to secure a 3-1 victory in the match.

The Toreros are back in action on Sunday night, when they conclude play in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic with an 8:00 p.m. PST clash with host Hawaii. The match is set to be streamed live on ESPN+.
