SPOKANE, WA — Jennifer Petrie, clipboard and box score in hand, slowly tip-toed her way down the hallway, not knowing quite what awaited her around the corner in the visitor's locker room at the Charlotte Y. Martin Centre. A split second and a series of intrepid footsteps later, she was doused in water, dancing jubilantly with her players as they emptied a series of bottles on her head and congratulated her on the 500th victory of her storied coaching career.
It was a milestone 26 years in the making for the native San Diegan, who after ascending to the head coaching position at USD built her hometown college volleyball program into a national brand and a perennial postseason contender.
"It's just unimaginable to me," Petrie said afterwards, still wringing water from her hair. "This has been built on so many years of so many great players and so many great coaches that have worked alongside me."
Her players set the celebration into motion with a dominant 3-0 sweep of Gonzaga in their first West Coast Conference game of 2024, beating the Bulldogs 25-13, 25-16, and 25-21 to prevail in straight sets for a fourth consecutive match. It was a fitting tribute to Petrie's grasp on the league, extending the Toreros' 58-match win streak against the Zags (1-10, 0-1 WCC) as USD pulled above .500 (6-5, 1-0 WCC) for the first time this season.Â
"I thought that we played pretty clean," said Petrie. "We were trying to execute some different things and it was nice to be able to see them play pretty free. Our team is coming together."
Freshman
Kennedy Osunsanmi highlighted the Toreros' efforts on offense, racking up 15 kills and a service ace while hitting at a strong .522 clip. She was one of three Toreros to notch double-digit kills on the evening, a group that included
Haylee Stoner and her 10-kill performance that saw the San Marcos High School graduate hit an absurd .769.
The Toreros' offensive efforts were bolstered by yet another standout match from freshman setter
Kylie Munday. Playing less than an hour away from her hometown of Post Falls, Idaho and with more than 100 friends and family members cheering her on in the stands, she totaled 42 assists while adding seven digs, a service ace, and a kill for good measure.Â
"It was just so fun to see them all again," Munday said of the crowd, which made the match feel more like a San Diego home game than one taking place in Spokane. "They've supported me my whole career."
Kristen Erland totaled four blocks as USD stuffed GU 14 times to whittle the home team's hitting percentage down to a minuscule .071.
Madi Allen contributed 13 digs.Â
Though Gonzaga crept back within two points with the score 23-21 late in the third and final frame, the outcome never seemed to be in question for a Torero team that has now won 12 straight sets.
"We've turned a corner in our season right now," Petrie described. "We have a lot more confidence in what we're doing…the girls are coming out and they believe."
A trip to Pullman, Washington to take on WCC newcomer Washington State this Saturday awaits, with the Cougars (6-4, 1-0 WCC) likely to pose a bigger challenge for USD than a Gonzaga team still in search of its second win of 2024. But for a moment, the coach who has won more than just about everybody in San Diego took a rare moment to reflect.Â
"It means a lot," Petrie added of the 500-victory milestone, which moved her all-time coaching record to 500-180 (.735). "I told the women in the locker room that I'm still here because of them, and I always want more, and I'm excited to see what this team can do."
