Toreros Come Up Short at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA – Hitting the road for their lone game of the week, the San Diego women's basketball team (4-11, 0-6 WCC) came up short on the road against the Santa Clara Broncos (9-9, 3-5 WCC) by a 67-59 final score on Saturday afternoon at the Leavey Center. 

Truitt Reilly had another strong afternoon as she scored a team-high 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out a trio of assists against the Broncos.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Santa Clara managed to score the first six points of Saturday's game until Truitt Reilly created some space and knocked down a long two for USD's first field goal of the game. 
  • The Toreros would continue to erase their early deficit as Kylie Horstmeyer put home a layup that evened the score at seven apiece. 
  • Reilly would go on to knock down a pair of free throws late in the quarter as the Broncos held a 14-9 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.
  • SCU was able to build a nine point advantage before the Toreros went on a run of their own started by an Ava Ranson three-point knockdown to get closer. 
  • USD then used a pair of Reilly field goals and then a Jayden Rhodes layup to even the game up at 18 midway through the second quarter.
  • It was close throughout the rest of the first half as Santa Clara scored a couple late buckets to take a 32-27 lead into the locker room.
  • Starting the second half with some strong play, Dresha Moore scored USD's first two buckets of the second half to make it a one point game early in the third quarter.
  • The first part of the third quarter was a back-and-forth affair with neither side getting much separation as Hallie Rhodes made a layup to make it 40-38 Broncos with 5:02 left in the third quarter.
  • Lauren McCall was able to split a pair of free throws before SCU went on a 7-0 run to end the quarter with a 51-42 lead.
  • Looking to keep the deficit close, Horstmeyer went on the attack and put home a layup for the Toreros' first fourth quarter points to make it a seven point game.
  • After the San Diego defense was able to force a turnover, Erica Carr was able to take advantage with a turnaround paint shot that got USD within five at 51-46.
  • The hometown Broncos would go on to take control of the rest of the game as they earned the 67-59 victory on their home floor. 

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Reilly had a tremendous game against the Broncos as she scored 14 points to go along with nine rebounds, three assists and knocking down all four free throws she attempted. 
  • Playing key minutes off the bench for her team, H. Rhodes scored 11 points on 5-of-10 from the field to go along with three assists and a pair of rebounds in 34 minutes of action. 
  • Making her first collegiate start in Saturday's game, Moore scored eight points, grabbed seven rebounds and came away with a steal against Santa Clara. 
  • Doing a lot of the little things to help her team on Saturday, J. Rhodes scored seven points, collected six rebounds and came away with a pair of steals in her 24 minutes of action.
