SAN DIEGO – Back in action on their home floor, the San Diego women's basketball team (4-12, 0-7 WCC) dropped a close back-and-forth game against the Pepperdine Waves (7-9, 2-5 WCC) on Saturday afternoon at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Dresha Moore had a tremendous afternoon making her second career collegiate start as she earned a 10 point and 10 rebound double-double against the Waves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Getting the party started on Saturday was Kylie Horstmeyer who scored a layup following a pair of offensive rebounds from Moore.
- After the Waves were able to gain some separation, the Toreros started to claw back as Truitt Reilly put home a layup and Claire Gallagher knocked down a huge three to bring the deficit down to three points with 2:27 left in the quarter.
- Pepperdine would go on to score the final four points of the quarter as they led 21-14 at the end of one.
- Coming out of in the second quarter Ava Ranson knocked down a deep three point shot off an assist from Reilly to make it a four point game and forced the Waves into taking a timeout.
- After Pepperdine was able to build their lead back up to 12 points, Ranson knocked down another three and Reilly made another layup to get back within seven at 34-27.
- Coming off the bench and providing a spark, Eva Ruse grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a put back as the Toreros went into the locker room trailing 38-31.
- San Diego got off to another fast start in the third quarter as Moore earned an and-one off a Pepperdine turnover to get back within five points.
- The Toreros then rattled off a 9-0 run as Horstmeyer made back-to-back shots to put USD ahead 46-44 with 4:52 left in the third quarter ahead of the media timeout.
- After San Diego built a six point lead, the Waves scored the final nine points of the quarter to take a 53-50 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
- Ranson continued her strong scoring night by scoring USD's first three points of the quarter and Moore got an offensive put back to knotted the score at 55-all.
- It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the whole quarter as Lauren McCall hit a huge three on the wing that put USD up a point at 63-62.
- The Waves would go on to score six of the game's last eight point as they earned the 68-66 road victory on Saturday afternoon.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Moore played a great overall game with a 10 point and 10 rebound double-double in her 31 minutes of action. Dresha also contributed a pair of blocks and an assist on Saturday afternoon.
- Reilly notched her third double-double of the season against the Waves as she scored 11 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out a season-best six assists.
- Matching the team-high in points, Ranson scored 13 points and came away with a trio of boards, assists and steals in Saturday's rematch with Pepperdine.
- Horstmeyer once again led San Diego in minutes played as she scored 13 points in her 37 minutes of action to go along with three rebounds and a pair of assists.
