No. 16 Toreros Take Down Cowboys in 2025 Opener

San Diego men's tennis beats Oklahoma State by 5-2 margin at Hogan Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon

SAN DIEGO — No. 16 San Diego men's tennis on Saturday afternoon opened up its 2025 schedule by defeating Oklahoma State by a score of 5-2 at the Hogan Tennis Center.

The Toreros jumped out to an early lead and secured the doubles point two matches to none after nationally top-ranked pairing Stian Klaassen and Oliver Tarvet beat the Cowboys' Isaac Becroft and Alessio Basile 6-3 at number one doubles and No. 88 duo Iiro Vasa and Savriyan Danilov rolled to a 6-0 decision over Derek Pham and Thomas Gadecki at number two doubles. No. 72 doubles partners Blake Kasday and Adrien Berrut held a 5-4 advantage in the first frame of their clash with Nicolas Kobelt and Ian Bracks, but the matchup went unfinished.

San Diego kept its momentum going into singles play, racing to a 4-0 advantage when Tarvet, ranked No. 15 nationally for singles, dominated No. 108 Becroft 6-0, 6-1, No. 29 Savriyan won over Basile, 6-2, 6-1, and Neo Niedner defeated Matei Onofrei by a 6-1, 6-3 margin.

Later in the day, Vasa put USD up even further when he grinded out a 3-6, 7-6 (10-8), [10-8] decision in his favor against Gustaf Strom.

"Great team win against a very good Oklahoma State squad to kick off the year," USD men's tennis head coach Ryan Keckley said after the match. "It was wonderful to see our doubles sharp and in good form. The experience from last year and this fall certainly helped us gather that first point. I saw some nerves to open both singles and doubles play, but we quickly found our footing and competitiveness. We let a few matches slip away from us in singles because we shifted away from what makes us good, but these are items we can address and fix right away. On a side note, I want to thank all the people that came out and created a welcoming atmosphere for our home opener. It is always something special to play in front of San Diego tennis fans!"
