No. 15 Toreros Dismantle LMU in 3-0 Route

Cesar Bahena and Iain Wagner deliver key goals in conference victory

SAN DIEGO — Bouncing back in a big way on their home pitch, the San Diego men's soccer team (8-2-3, 2-1-1 WCC) secured a 3-0 victory over LMU (5-4-4, 1-1-2 WCC) on Wednesday night from Torero Stadium.

Cesar Bahena secured his second brace of the season as he delivered the game-winner in the first half and built on the Toreros' lead later with a pretty chipped-in goal on a penalty kick. Iain Wagner also contributed to the effort by scoring his team-leading fifth goal of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wednesday night's contest started off slow, as neither team registered a shot on goal until the 10th minute, when Steven Ramirez fired a shot towards the bottom right corner, but a routine save from the Lions kept it out.
  • The Toreros were the first to strike as Wagner connected with a streaking Bahena who had an open shot inside the box which he slotted home in the bottom corner to give his team a 1-0 advantage in the 27th minute.
  • No team made any momentum to close the half as the Toreros' 1-0 lead held at the break.
  • Wagner picked up right where he left off as the second half began, this time scoring a goal of his own after stealing the ball from the LMU player and smashing a left-footed goal from 18 yards out to grab a 2-0 advantage.
  • At the 74 minute mark, the Lions recorded just their first shot of the match which was blocked and sailed out of bounds for an LMU goal kick.
  • Following a rocket shot from Taj Eagleston that was saved by the Lions' goal keeper, Bahena hustled after the ball and earned a penalty to set up a free kick.
  • With the opportunity to earn his second brace in three matches, Bahena fooled the keeper beautifully by chipping in a shot right down the middle of the goal for his second goal of the night for a 3-0 Torero lead.
  • Following another strong team performance, USD earned the 3-0 victory to remain unbeaten at Torero Stadium as they sit just one point back of first place in the WCC standings.
TORERO TIDBITS
  •  Wagner regained the team lead in goals by scoring his fifth of the season in Wednesday night's take down of LMU.
  • The Torero defense remained stingy as they allowed their fewest shots of the season as LMU recorded just three total chances in the match with zero on-target.
  • Bahena's two goal night marked the fourth career brace of his outstanding USD career as he secured yet another game-winning goal.
  • Putting together another standout showing in goal, Lucca Adams secured his fourth clean sheet and his second during WCC play.
