Beach, Munday, and Engeman Headline Sweep of Portland

Toreros beat Pilots 3-0 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Thursday night to earn third straight sweep, fifth consecutive win

SAN DIEGO — Multiple generations of Torero volleyball alumni sat courtside on Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, kicking off USD's Homecoming and Family Weekend festivities by returning to their old stomping grounds.

In a key conference matchup against Portland, this season's squad made sure that the Toreros of yesteryear were treated to a show, sweeping the Pilots by scores of 25-18, 25-13, and 25-15.

Sophomore setter Kylie Munday's seventh double-double of 2025 set the stage for graduate transfer Kali Engeman to go a perfect nine-for-nine on her attacks, compiling a 1.000 hitting percentage to help deal the Pilots their first conference loss of the season.

Engeman also tallied six block assists to lead a San Diego defense that totaled 11 blocks as a team to limit the Pilots to a season-low .011 hitting percentage.

Nemo Beach led the way for the Toreros offensively, tallying a game-high 13 kills while hitting .375. Sophomore Isabel Clark was just behind, recording 11 kills of her own to go with four total blocks.

San Diego (12-4, 5-0 WCC) and Portland (8-7, 3-1 WCC) both came into Thursday night's conference battle looking to remain undefeated in conference play, but ultimately it was the Toreros who prevailed, claiming their third straight victory in straight sets to remain atop the WCC standings.

Portland got off to a hot start in set one by jumping out to a 7-4 lead, but a booming kill from Beach knotted the score up at 14-14 and the Toreros did not look back, winning by a 25-18 margin.

The Pilots claimed the first point of set two but never led again in that frame. Four kills from Beach and multiple scores from Clark, Ava Durgan, and Munday secured a dominating 25-13 victory for USD in set two.

A 10-0 run helped San Diego run away with the third and final frame, stretching its lead to as many as 12 before the Torero fans and volleyball alumni rose onto their feet with their pointer fingers in the air to signify match point. As they did so, senior outside hitter Grace Oliva checked into the match for her first action of the evening and served, delivering a game-winning service ace to secure the sweep before being mobbed in celebration by her teammates.
