Toreros Fall Short at Colorado State

Kylie Ray scored 20 plus points in her return to the USD lineup

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Returning to the road to start the new week, the San Diego women's basketball team (1-4, 0-0 WCC) fell short against Colorado State (4-0, 0-0 MWC) by a 71-44 final score on Monday evening from Moby Arena.

Kylie Ray put together a nice game after missing USD's previous matchup against Arizona State, as she scored 21 points and secured eight rebounds against the Rams.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Getting the action started on Monday night, Olivia Owens came through on the defensive end of the floor with a steal and found Ray wide open for a jumper as the Toreros scored the first points of the game.
  • The Rams were able to build up a six point advantage midway through the quarter before Ray made a strong move to the hoop, absorbed the contact from the CSU defender and earned an and-one to make it a 12-9 score.
  • On USD's next possession, Ray found a wide open Lilly Amor who nailed a three from the wing to even the score at 12-all.
  • Colorado State would score once more before the quarter ended to take a 14-12 lead.
  • CSU built their lead back up to six points, before Eva Ruse intercepted an interior pass and helped USD earn a pair of free throws on the other end to make it an 18-13 score.
  • Trailing by 10 midway through the quarter, San Diego started to crawl back after Dresha Moore made a great pass out of a double team and found Hallie Rhodes wide open from three to make it a seven point deficit.
  • Colorado State would end the first half on a 7-0 run to lead 30-16 heading into halftime.
  • Getting the second half going, Ray stayed on the attack and scored USD's first points of the second half with a strong drive for a layup that made it a 33-18 score.
  • Ray continued her strong game by scoring four straight points via a pair of free throws and from a mid-range jump shot as the Toreros trailed 42-24.
  • San Diego's final bucket of the quarter came courtesy of Owens who made a nice turnaround shot in the paint as USD trailed 52-31 with just 10 minutes remaining in the game.
  • The Toreros had some nice moments in the early minutes of the fourth quarter as H. Rhodes started the scoring with and offensive rebound and a put back.
  • Their next time down the floor, Ysabella Von Spieler got herself open and knocked down a three following a great feed from Ray to make it 55-36.
  • Colorado State would settle in for the rest of the quarter as they picked up the 71-44 victory on their home floor.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Ray had another strong showing for USD as she scored 21 points, secured eight rebounds, contributed a pair of assists and steals while also shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
  • Contributing off the bench for the first time this season, H. Rhodes scored six points, grabbed a pair of rebounds and forced two steals against the Rams on Monday.
  • Dominating on the glass throughout their matchup with CSU, the Toreros were +10 in the rebounding margin and secured 14 offensive rebounds compared to just one from Colorado State.
