SANTA CLARA – Beginning West Coast Conference action on the road, the San Diego women's basketball team (6-8, 0-1 WCC) came up short against Santa Clara (12-3, 1-0 WCC) by a 68-46 final score on Sunday afternoon from the Leavey Center.
Kylie Ray scored 10 points and collected five rebounds in her first WCC conference game, while Lilly Amor knocked down a trio of threes as the Toreros faced the Broncos for the first and only time during the regular season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first two minutes with both sides recording stops, USD got on the board first courtesy of an Owens mid-range jumper to take an early lead.
- Next time down the floor, Ray made a nice move to the hoop and scored to put the Toreros ahead by four as they held the Broncos off the scoreboard until after the first media timeout.
- In the final seconds of the first quarter, Owens ran a fast break and got to the hoop for a layup as Santa Clara led 13-10 through the first 10 minutes of play.
- Trailing by nine early in the second quarter, USD got a little closer as Dresha Moore scored a layup to get the Toreros within seven at 19-12.
- Later in the quarter, Ray made a pair of free throws as San Diego trailed 32-14 heading into halftime.
- Coming out of the locker room, Hallie Rhodes started to get going as she scored four quick points to bring USD's deficit down to 35-18 early in the second half.
- At the 7:18 mark of the quarter, Amor knocked down her first three point shot of the game to get San Diego back within 14 points.
- In the team's final possession of the quarter, Owens earned a trip to the charity stripe and knocked down both attempts as the Toreros trailed 53-33 with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
- In the fourth quarter, Owens got to work as she made a nice move and knocked down a turnaround jump shot to make the score 61-35.
- Later in the quarter, Jayden Rhodes recorded her first bucket of the game as she put home a layup before San Diego ultimately came up short by a 68-46 score in Sunday's conference opener.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Ray once again reached double figures in scoring as she recorded 10 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out an assist and forced a steal against SCU.
- Amor had a nice afternoon shooting the ball as she totaled nine points going 3-for-7 from beyond the arc in her 24 minutes of action.
- Owens scored eight points, secured five rebounds and recorded a trio of assists on Sunday afternoon against the Broncos.
