San Diego Set to Face Wisconsin and UC Riverside

The Toreros have won three of their last five as they're set to face the Badgers and Highlanders

MADISON, Wisc./SAN DIEGO– Following a split during the team's two game home stand, the San Diego women's basketball team (4-6, 0-0 WCC) is back in action for two more games as the team reaches the stretch run of non-conference action.

The Toreros will begin the week by traveling to America's Dairyland to take on Wisconsin (7-3, 1-0 B1G) this Wednesday, December 10 at 9:00 a.m. PST from the Kohl Center.

USD will then return home to sunny Southern California as they will host UC Riverside (2-6, 1-1 Big West) on Sunday, December 14 at 2:00 p.m. from the Jenny Craig Pavilion for the team's penultimate non-conference home game.

San Diego's looking to replicate their strong showing on Sunday as they took down Utah State by a 70-66 final score in the JCP as they had four scorers reach double figures in the win over the Aggies.

IT'S TORERO TIME

  • USD enters the first year of the Blanche Alverson era with a revamped roster that includes seven new faces to go along with eight returners from last season's squad as the team has started the season with a 4-6 record through 10 games, but have won three of their last five games overall.
  • San Diego's youth has shined in the early games of the season as freshman post player Ayla Williams was named the WCC's Freshman of the Week after posting consecutive double-doubles against Binghamton and Utah State. Williams' 18 boards against the Aggies were the most from a WCC player this season.
  • Senior guard Hallie Rhodes also put together a great week for the Toreros as she poured in 25 points on 11-of-16 from the field against the Bearcats and is averaging 10.3 PPG a 43% shooting percentage to start the season.
  • Not to be out done, freshman guard Olivia Owens has put together many noteworthy showings to begin her collegiate career including her 25 points and nine rebound performance against Utah State to help guide her team to their third home victory of the season.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS WISCONSIN AND UC RIVERSIDE

  • Wednesday morning's matchup in Madison will be just the second ever meeting between the Toreros and Badgers, as Wisconsin bested USD 74-73 back on Dec. 30, 1968 when the two teams played on the USD campus.
  • This will be San Diego's first time competing in America's Dairyland as a program.
  • Sunday afternoon's contest against the Highlanders will be USD's fifth all-time meeting with UCR as the Toreros lead the all-time series 3-1.
  • The two teams last faced off during the 2006-07 season when the Toreros picked up a 68-53 victory at home during the program's second game of the season.

SCOUTING THE BADGERS

  • Wisconsin enters Wednesday's game feeling good after starting the season 7-3, with their most recent victory occurring in their first game of Big 10 play when they took down No. 20 Michigan State 78-64 on their home floor. The Spartans are the second ranked squad the Badgers have faced in the early portion of the season as they lost to #13 Ole Miss by a 65-56 score in a neutral site game.
  • Leading the way for the Badger offense this season has been the play of Kyrah Daniels who's averaging 13.3 PPG to go along with 4.8 rebounds per contest as she's been a force in the Wisconsin back court.
  • USD will also have their hands full trying to limit the three point shooting of Destiny Howell who has started every game for her team and is shooting 43% from beyond the arc this season.

SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS

  • UC Riverside enters play with a 2-6 mark on the season as the Highlanders have already played their first two games of Big West play as they defeated Cal Poly and came up short against UC Irvine. UCR will be well-rested entering Sunday's game with their most recent contest taking place on December 6 against the Mustangs.
  • Leading the way for UC Riverside early in the season has been the play of Hannah Wickstrom as she's started all five games she's played in for her team and is averaging 18.8 PPG while shooting 43% from the field.
  • The Toreros will look to take advantage of the Highlanders on the glass as USD has been among the nation's best at rebounding, UC Riverside has been out rebounded by their opponents by nearly five boards per game.
