SAN DIEGO — College baseball season will begin at Fowler Park this weekend, with San Diego (0-0, 0-0 WCC) hosting No. 23 TCU (0-0, Big 12) for a four-game series in America's Finest City.
First pitch on Opening Night is set for 6:05 p.m., followed by a 5:05 p.m. start on Saturday, a 1 p.m. matinee on Sunday, and a 12:05 p.m. finale on Monday afternoon.
Braden Surprenant will have the call on ESPN+ and USDToreros.com (live audio), and will be joined by Jack Cronin on the broadcast for Friday and Sunday's matchups. Live statistics will be available alongside the audio stream on USDToreros.com.
USD baseball alum
Ariel Armas, who won the 2024 ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award at catcher last summer before being drafted by the Chicago Cubs, is set to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Friday. A pregame moment of silence is also planned prior to the season opener in honor of Torero Legend Brian Matusz, who passed away in January.
ALL TIME SERIES AGAINST TCU
• The Toreros are 2-2 against the Horned Frogs all-time, with the two teams' most recent meeting coming from March 10-12, 2023, when San Diego dropped two of three games to then-No. 10 TCU at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.
• USD came out hot and dominated the No. 10 ranked Horned Frogs at Lupton Stadium by a 14-2 margin in game one that weekend, but dropped the final two games of the series by scores of 3-1 and 5-4.
• San Diego and TCU's first-ever meeting came four seasons earlier in 2019, when the Horned Frogs finished off a West Coast swing with a one-game midweek battle at Fowler Park on a Tuesday night.
• The Toreros got the best of the No. 21 ranked Horned Frogs that evening, defeating them 9-6 at Fowler Park.Â
• Left-handed pitcher
Grady Miller — who is now an assistant coach for USD — was credited with the win after entering the game out of the bullpen.Â
• Friday marks the third straight series/matchup in which USD and TCU will meet while the Horned Frogs are nationally ranked.
• That streak comprises the entirety of the teams' all-time series; the Toreros and Horned Frogs have never played each other with TCU unranked.
OPENING WEEKEND SUCCESS UNDER BROCK UNGRICHT
• Since taking the helm at USD in 2022, head coach
Brock Ungricht has compiled a 7-2-1 record on Opening Weekend.Â
• TCU's appearance at Fowler Park this weekend makes it four straight seasons in which the Toreros have begun their season against a Power-Five opponent.
Past opening weekend successes have included...
•
2022: San Diego hosts Oregon at Fowler Park and wins three of four against the Ducks. The Toreros were six outs away from a 11-9 win in the finale, but were undone after Oregon plated 12 runs in the top of the frame to secure the win and stave off a San Diego sweep.
•
2023: USD opens up its schedule at home again and wins its first three games against Nebraska before finishing the series finale in a wild 16-16 tie with the Cornhuskers. San Diego scored six times in the final frame of the series to even the score, but the game ended after seven innings due to previously agreed upon travel arrangements for Nebraska.
• 2024: Ungricht leads his team to its biggest Opening Weekend challenge yet, a three-game bout at No. 16 Texas. The Toreros drop two of three at UFCU Disch-Falk Field but steal a thrilling 6-5 Saturday win in extra innings after then-redshirt freshman
Ryan Ward hammered a go-ahead two-run homer in the 10th and senior centerfielder
Dustin Allen put the Toreros' up for good by stealing home as part of a double steal in the 11th.
USD VS. RANKED OPPONENTS WITH BROCK UNGRIGHT AT THE HELM
San Diego has won six games against Top-25 opponents under Ungricht, including victories over:
• No. 11 Gonzaga (May 21, 27, and 28, 2022)
• No. 10 TCU (March 10, 2023)
• No. 16 Texas (11 innings, February 17, 2024)
• No. 17 Dallas Baptist (March 9, 2024)
