Toreros Split Games on Friday Evening at CBU Classic

RIVERSIDE – Taking the field for their second tournament of the season, the San Diego softball team (3-4, 0-0 WCC) earned a split in both of their games at John C. Funk Stadium on Friday. Beginning the action, the Toreros fell to Utah State (5-2, 0-0 MWC) 5-3, but followed that up with an impressive seventh inning comeback to knock off host California Baptist (3-4, 0-0 WAC) 4-3 to end the evening.

Michelle Delgado began the comeback against the Lancers and came around to score on an RBI double from EJ Joyner in the seventh. Mikalyn Emanuelli would then place a ball perfectly down the first base line that allowed Joyner to sprint home as the go-ahead run.

Pitching two innings in relief, Kaitlyn Bartlow picked up her first victory of the season as she shut the door on CBU with a stress free bottom of the seventh.

HOW IT HAPPENED - UTAH STATE 5, SAN DIEGO 3

  • Kaitlyn Wynia continued her scorching start to the 2025 season as she grounded a one out single up the middle for USD's first base runner, but was left stranded at first base.
  • The Aggies were able to strike first with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning for an early lead in Riverside.
  • Starting to mount a comeback, the Torero offense got to work in the top of the third as Sophia Pinedo delivered an opposite field single and came around to score three batters later as Joecellia Roberts worked a bases loaded walk to cut Utah State's lead in half at 2-1.
  • While the Torero bats began to wake up, Kelsey Tadlock shined in the circle by tossing three straight scoreless frames as it was a 2-1 game heading into the fifth inning.
  • Utah State would add to their lead with a two-out RBI single in the bottom half of the fifth as the Toreros trailed 3-1 with two innings left in the game.
  • Getting the rally started, Taylor Johnson began USD's half of the sixth with a lead-off single to center and Shawnese Hogue-Lacy delivered a one out hit of her own. Alyssa Hernandez would come through with two down in the inning with an RBI single to right field as San Diego made it a 3-2 game.
  • Coming through with another big hit later in the inning, EJ Joyner came off the USD bench singled through the right side to plate Tele Jennings to knot the game at three apiece.
  • The Aggies would go on to tack on a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth as they earned a 5-3 victory in the first half of Friday's doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED - SAN DIEG0 4, CALIFORNIA BAPTIST 3

  • The game was scoreless at the end of the first as Bartlow stranded a California Baptist lead-off double in the bottom of the first with the help of a great defensive play from Hailey Mulligan
  • CBU would break through on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly to right as they grabbed a 1-0 lead on their home diamond.
  • Neither offense was able to break through in the middle portions of the game until the Lancers added a tack-on run in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 2-0.
  • Delgado would deliver San Diego's first hit of the game with two outs in the top of the fifth but was left at second to keep USD's deficit at a pair of runs.
  • The Lancers didn't waste time responding as they scored their third run of the game on a wild pitch to make it 3-1 heading into the sixth inning.
  • After the Toreros were able to put two runners on with two away, Taylor Johnson grounded the ball to second but the Lancer infielder threw the ball out of play allowing Emanuelli to score and make it a one run game.
  • Bartlow retired all three hitters she faced in the CBU half of the six to help set up the Torero heroics in the seventh.
  • Delgado began the rally with her second double of the game and came around as the tying run three batters later as Joyner perfectly placed a ball along the left field line. Emanuelli would then reach base on an error by the CBU pitcher as USD now led 4-3.
  • After retiring the first two hitters in the Lancers' seventh, Bartlow reared back and blew a fastball by the California Baptist hitter as San Diego earned the 4-3 victory to wrap up the first day of the CBU Classic.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Delgado had a strong day at the plate going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles against the Lancers and made a couple of nice plays at third base as well.
  • Bartlow retired all six hitters she faced against CBU with a pair of strikeouts as she earned her first win of 2025.
  • Hernandez had a pair of good games as she went a combined 2-for-6 and drove in a pair of runs on Friday in Riverside.
