RIVERSIDE – In the third game of the CBU Tournament, San Diego softball allowed four answered runs in the first inning, leading to a 6-3 loss against Utah State.
The Toreros (3-5) were unable to muster a run until the fourth inning when senior defensive player Joecellia Roberts recorded an RBI double down the right field line, scoring redshirt sophomore left fielder Carly Ruiz to make it a 5-1 deficit against the Aggies (6-2).
USD tried to put together a comeback rally beginning in the sixth inning, but it was not enough. After senior catcher Arisa Tovar reached on an error and junior first baseman EJ Joyner worked a nine-pitch at-bat into a walk, graduate student second baseman Alyssa Hernandez hit a base knock up the middle scoring Tovar. Then, Joyner scored on a wild pitch.
The two-out, sixth inning came to an end on the ensuing hitter when junior shortstop Hailey Mulligan struck out.
In the final frame, the Toreros were limited to a two-out single by sophomore right fielder Kaitlyn Wynia before Utah State won 6-3.
