San Diego Defeated by No. 23 TCU on Sunday Afternoon

Nine-run fourth inning helps Horned Frogs deal Toreros 13-5 loss at Fowler Park

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (0-3, 0-0 WCC) on Sunday afternoon dropped the third game of its weekend series with TCU (3-0, 0-0 Big 12), suffering a tough 13-5 loss to the Horned Frogs at Fowler Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning got TCU on the board first, the Horned Frogs scored nine runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-0 lead.
  • Jack Gurevitch responded in the bottom half of the frame with a solo shot to right field, then Gabe D'Arcy cut the deficit to 10-2 with an RBI double down the left field line.
  • An inning later, Austin Smith made it 10-3 with an RBI single.
  • TCU answered by scoring two more runs in the top of the seventh to extend its advantage.
  • Aden Howard reached base on a bunt single, advanced to second on a TCU error, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to add a fourth run for USD.
  • After the Horned Frogs scored once more in the eighth inning to make it 13-4, San Diego got a run back in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single from Jonathan Fitz, but got no closer.
ON THE MOUND
  • Austin Smith got the start on the mound for USD on Sunday and turned in 3.2 innings, giving up seven runs on five hits while striking out five.
  • A trio of freshmen relievers in Porter Rovin, AJ Frausto, and Jack Giordano finished the game on the mound for USD, combining to strike out five through the remaining 5.1 innings.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Rovin, Frausto, and Giordano all made their collegiate debuts on Sunday afternoon.
  • Gurevitch's fourth-inning longball was his team-high second of 2025.
  • Aden Howard went 2-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored.
  • After pinch hitting in games one and two of the series, Connor Meidroth and Jonathan Fitz both made their way into the starting lineup on Sunday. Meidroth began the game at second base and Fitz started behind the plate.
  • Gurevitch switched from playing first base to third base in the top of the sixth inning.
  • Throughout the first three games of the series, Jayden Lobliner has played three different positions: catcher, left field, and first base.
