FULLERTON – Back in action in Southern California, the San Diego softball team (4-7, 0-0 WCC) battled hard and fought for every out before ultimately coming up short to Cal State Fullerton (8-3, 0-0 Big West) by a 5-3 final score at Anderson Family Field.
Alyssa Hernandez had a huge game for the Toreros as she went 3-for-5 in the lead-off spot, while McKenna Braegelmann threw 5 1/3 great innings and allowed just one unearned run against the Titans on the road.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the first two Toreros were retired to begin the game, Kaitlyn Wynia lined a ball to the Fullerton shortstop that she couldn't handle to reach base on an error but was ultimately left stranded on first.
- The hometown Titans were able to start fast in their first at-bats of the game as they scored their first run on an RBI single in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.
- In the top of the third, Hernandez made her old team pay by delivering a one-out double to left center but was left stranded at third as the Toreros trailed by a run in the early innings.
- After Braegelmann set the Titans down in order in the bottom of the third, San Diego's offense got back to work as Shawnese Hogue-Lacy recorded an infield single and Taylor Johnson was hit by a pitch to put the first two base runners on.
- Hailey Mulligan would then deliver an RBI double to right-center that would plate Hogue-Lacy to even the game at one-all in the middle innings.
- Both pitchers would continue to control the game in the middle innings stifling each offense until Cal State Fullerton plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-1 Titan lead.
- Down to their final three outs, USD began to rally again as Hernandez led off the inning with a single up the middle and was pinch run for by Mallory Axline. Michelle Delgado then laid down a great sacrifice bunt to put a runner on second with one away in the inning.
- Wynia would then deliver another big hit for her squad with a single up the middle to plate Axline and even the game at two-all. EJ Joyner would then single to left and get Wynia to third who would then score on a Hogue-Lacy infield single as the Toreros led 3-2 in the seventh inning.
- Cal State Fullerton would push across the equalizing run in the seventh to force extra innings in Orange County.
- The Titans would hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth as they picked up a 5-3 non-conference victory on Wednesday night.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Hernandez continued her torrid start to the season with a 3-for-5 game in the Torero lead off spot against her former team.
- Hogue-Lacy turned in another strong performance as well by going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while catching the whole game and leading the USD pitching staff.
- Braegelmann was stellar in the circle for the Toreros on Wednesday as she went 5 1/3 innings allowing just one unearned run along with four hits, one walk and five punch outs.
