Toreros Come Up Short to Pilots on Thursday Night

PORTLAND – Returning to the road for a busy weekend in the Pacific Northwest, the San Diego women's basketball team (6-20, 2-15 WCC) came up short against the Portland Pilots (25-3, 14-3 WCC) by a 81-65 final score Thursday evening at the Chiles Center.

Kylie Horstmeyer turned in another phenomenal performance  as she recorded a new career-high with 30 points against the Pilots as she closes in on 1,000 points for her career.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USD was able to get off to a fast start on Thursday evening as Hallie Rhodes and Horstmeyer each made jump shots on the team's first two possessions for an early 4-0 lead.
  • The Pilots went on a mid-quarter run to take an early lead before Oregon native Truitt Reilly put home a driving layup to notch the game at 12-all.
  • Portland would go on to score the final five points of the quarter as they led 19-14 following the first 10 minutes of play.
  • After going scoreless to start the first three minutes of the second quarter, USD started mounting their comeback as Reilly scored a layup following a Pilot turnover to bring their deficit down to eight points.
  • Horstmeyer and Ava Ranson then made back-to-back three point shots that brought the lead back down to seven.
  • The Toreros would go on to score the final four points of the quarter thanks to a pair of Horstmeyer layups as San Diego trailed 39-34 as they went in to the locker room.
  • Out of the break, USD was able to bring their deficit down to one possession as Dresha Moore banked home a layup to make it 39-36 Portland.
  • Midway through the quarter Horstmeyer continued her tremendous scoring by knocking down another three point shot to get the Pilot lead back down to three points.
  • Portland would go on a late run in the third quarter to build a 62-45 lead with 10 minutes to go.
  • The Toreros got to work attacking the basket in the final quarter as both Horstmeyer and Reilly made a pair of free throws to make it a 68-49 Pilot lead.
  • Horstmeyer would go on to reach the 30 point threshold at the 2:36 mark of the quarter with a nice reverse layup to make it a 79-59 game.
  • Portland would hold on to the lead on their home floor as they walked away with the 81-65 victory on Thursday night.
