Toreros Play Complete Game in Win Over UCSD

LA JOLLA – Playing in the San Diego area for the first time during the 2025 season, the San Diego softball team (6-11, 0-0 WCC) picked up the 6-2 victory over crosstown rival UC San Diego (2-13, 0-0 Big West) on Wednesday afternoon at the Triton Softball Field.

USD's offense broke out in a big way as Carly Ruiz and Mikalyn Emanuelli each picked up multiple hits and drove in runs against UCSD.

In the circle, Kaitlyn Bartlow tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the victory on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Toreros were able to get off to a quick start on Wednesday as Emanuelli got the party started with a one out triple and would score one batter later on an RBI infield single from Alyssa Hernandez for an early USD lead.
  • Taking the circle in the bottom half, Bartlow would allow a lead off walk but would strike out the next two hitters she faced and benefited from the UCSD base runner leaving her base early to keep USD's 1-0 lead.
  • After both teams were held off the board in the second and third innings, the Torero offense picked back up in the top of the fourth.
  • Joecellia Roberts led off the frame by getting hit by a pitch and Hailey Mulligan walked to force some early traffic. After Carly Ruiz singled to load the bases, Emanuelli would deliver once again with an RBI knock to right field that scored Roberts to grow USD's lead to 2-0.
  • The Tritons began to threaten in the bottom half of the fourth with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Bartlow came through for her team as she recorded her third strikeout of the day with runners on second and third, and got a foul out to end the inning and maintain her team's lead.
  • USD's offense broke the game open in the fifth as Michelle Delgado roped a one out triple to the left center gap and then Arisa Tovar singled her home to make it 3-0.
  • Beginning a two-out rally, Mulligan singled home Tovar who came around to score on an error to grow the lead to four. Tele Jennings would then single to put two runners on for Ruiz who hit a two-run triple to center making it 6-0 San Diego.
  • The Tritons would plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, before Alex Riggs induced a ground ball to get a force out that ended the frame.
  • Riggs once again took the circle in the bottom of the seventh and got a ground out to third with a pair of runners on base to end the game and pick up the 6-2 victory.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Emanuelli got the day started as she went 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI and a run scored in the win over the Tritons.
  • Excelling on the mound, Bartlow picked up her third victory of the season by tossing 5 1/3 innings and allowing five hits, one walk and recording a trio of strikeouts at Triton Softball Field.
  • Riggs picked up her first collegiate strikeout as she went 1 2/3 innings and allowed just one earned run as she got the game's final five outs.
