Toreros Split Friday's Doubleheader in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. – Beginning another busy weekend on the road, the San Diego softball team (7-12, 0-0 WCC) was in action for a pair of games at Jane Sanders Stadium on Friday morning and afternoon.

Starting the day, San Diego put together a great start as they took down Loyola Chicago (2-13, 0-0 A-10) by a 9-1 final score in five innings as they run-ruled their first opponent during the 2025 season.

In the night cap, USD came up just short against tournament host #14 Oregon (16-1, 0-0 Big 10) 9-5 Friday evening on the Ducks' home diamond.

HOW IT HAPPENED: SAN DIEGO 9, LOYOLA CHICAGO 1

  • Getting the action started in Eugene, the Ramblers got their lead off runner on base with a single but Kelsey Tadlock came through in the clutch for her team. After getting a strike out, she fielded a comebacker and fired to the plate to get the lead runner in a pickle as the Toreros were able to put up a zero to start the game.
  • In their first trip to the plate, San Diego's offense didn't wait around as Carly Ruiz worked a lead off walk and Taylor Johnson delivered an opposite field two-run home run to give the Toreros an early two run lead.
  • Tadlock continued her stellar pitching in the second inning as she set Loyola Chicago down in order while recording a pair of strikeouts in the frame.
  • Continuing to put pressure on their opponent early, USD received singles from Shawnese Hogue-Lacy and Kaitlyn Wynia with two down in the inning. After loading the bases, both Hogue-Lacy and Wynia came around to score on a wild pitch and passed ball respectively to make it 4-0 Toreros.
  • Not done yet in the second, Alyssa Hernandez grounded a base hit back up the box that scored Ruiz to give USD the 5-0 lead through two innings of play.
  • San Diego's offense wasn't done yet in the third inning as Hogue-Lacy recorded her second hit and Hailey Mulligan singled up the middle with one out in the inning. Kaitlyn Wynia then broke the game open later in the inning by grounding a two-run triple down the right field line to make it 7-0 Toreros.
  • Mikalyn Emanuelli would keep the rally going with an infield single to score Wynia and then Hernandez would deliver her second run scoring hit of the game as USD enjoyed a 9-0 lead after three innings of play.
  • Tadlock would put up her fourth zero of the game after striking out two hitters and putting her team in position to win the game via run rule.
  • The Ramblers would scratch across their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth inning, but Alex Riggs would slam the door after fielding a ground ball and tossing the ball to first to give USD the 9-1 win in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED: #14 OREGON 9, SAN DIEGO 5

  • After San Diego was held scoreless in their half of the first, the Ducks managed to plate three runs to grab an early lead at home.
  • Getting the start in the second half of the doubleheader, Emma Giamie began to settle in nicely as she retired Oregon in order in the second and put up another zero in the third inning as UO held their 3-0 advantage heading into the fourth inning.
  • USD would build a fantastic inning in the top of the fifth as Michelle Delgado began the frame by reaching on an error and would come around to score on an RBI double from Mulligan that brought the deficit down to a pair of runs. Later in the frame, Hogue-Lacy would score on a passed ball after the Ducks made a pitching change to make it a one run game.
  • Not done yet, the Toreros would tie up the game on a line drive rocket off Wynia's bat that scored Mulligan to make it three-all. Putting her team ahead with another clutch knock, Hernandez grounded a ball past the Ducks' shortstop to give the Toreros the 4-3 lead.
  • Still adding on in the same inning, Ruiz got a great break on a ball in the dirt and sprinted home to score on a wild pitch as the Toreros enjoyed a 5-3 lead.
  • The Ducks didn't wait long to respond as they plated five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take an 8-5 advantage.
  • Oregon would go to score their ninth run of the evening in the bottom of the sixth as they picked up the 9-5 win to wrap up play on Friday evening.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Tadlock turned in a phenomenal outing against the Ramblers as she threw four scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out six hitters in her team's victory.
  • Hernandez had another big afternoon at the plate going 3-for-7 and driving in a trio of runs while playing second base in both games for USD.
  • Ruiz did an excellent job of getting on base at the top of Toreros' lineup as she went 1-for-4 with a trio of runs scored and walks drawn in Eugene.
  • Getting the start behind the plate in both games, Hogue-Lacy went a combined 3-for-5 with three runs scored while also doing a great job leading the San Diego pitching staff.
  • Wynia was phenomenal as well at the bottom of the order as she went a combined 4-for-5 with a triple, three runs scored and drove in a trio of runs as well.
