Toreros Wrap Up Weekend in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Tex. – Wrapping up opening weekend with another doubleheader, the San Diego softball team (2-3, 0-0 WCC) picked up another split to finish their time in San Marcos. Beginning the day, USD came up short to Bradley (2-3, 0-0 MVC) in 2-0 pitcher's duel, and then responded with an impressive 10-5 win over Lipscomb (1-4, 0-0 ASUN) with the bats exploding for a seven-run fourth inning.

Kaitlyn Bartlow went the distance in game one as she allowed just two runs across seven innings of work to start her season. Joecellia Roberts was a key part of the offense as she hammered her first home run of the season as the Toreros bats went to work by scoring double digit runs against the Bison.

HOW IT HAPPENED - BRADLEY 2, SAN DIEGO 0

  • Bartlow started in the circle for the Toreros for the first time in 2025 and tossed a one, two, three top of the first and stranded a lead-off double in the second to keep the Braves off the board.
  • USD got their first hit of the afternoon in the bottom of the second as Joecellia Roberts drove a base hit to right field but was left stranded to keep the game scoreless.
  • The game would remain scoreless until the top of the fourth inning as Bradley recorded a two-out RBI single to give them the 1-0 advantage midway through the game.
  • Adding to their lead in their half of the sixth, the Braves received a two-out solo home run from their third baseman Bailey Sampl to make it 2-0 Bradley.
  • Looking to answer, the Toreros were able to get their lead off hitter on-base as Mikalyn Emanuelli was hit by a pitch, but was caught stealing to end the USD threat.
  • Down to their final three outs, Roberts led off the seventh with an infield single but couldn't come across to score as the Braves earned a 2-0 victory in the first half of Sunday's doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED - SAN DIEGO 10, LIPSCOMB 5

  • Showing signs that it would be game at the plate, Carly Ruiz worked a lead-off walk and Kaitlyn Wynia followed with a single as the first two Toreros reached. USD would be held off the scoreboard in the first as the Bison induced a double play ball to limit the early threat.
  • Kelsey Tadlock entered the circle for her second start of the season and retired Lipscomb in order as the game was scoreless heading into the second inning.
  • Tele Jennings led off USD's half of the second and reached second base on a fielding error by the Bison left fielder, she would come around to score on an Arisa Tovar RBI single to give the Toreros an early 1-0 lead.
  • Not relenting one inning later, Kaitlyn Wynia pulled a one-out single to right and came around to score on Roberts' two-run homer to right field giving San Diego a 3-0 advantage.
  • Lipscomb would load the bases off Tadlock in the third and the Toreros turned to Emma Giamie looking to escape the jam. Emma Giaime would come through in a big way for her team as she recorded a strikeout and a groundout to keep the Bison off the scoreboard.
  • USD's bats would break out in a big way with a seven-run top of the fourth with four hits, a pair of walks an a couple of Toreros reaching base via error gave the Toreros the 10-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the fourth.
  • The Bison would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning but San Diego was able to limit the damage to one as they led by nine in the late innings.
  • Lipscomb would a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to trim USD's lead down to five.
  • The Bison were able to get a couple runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but Giaime re-entered the circle and induced a fielder's choice for the final out as San Diego earned the 10-5 victory on Sunday.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Bartlow threw a complete game in the opener as she allowed just two runs across seven innings with just two hits and striking out three Braves hitters.
  • Roberts had two great games as she went a combined 3-for-4 with a walk, two-run home run and a pair of runs scored in San Marcos.
  • Wynia continued her strong start by going 4-for-5 in both games, with three of the hits coming against the Bison in game two.
  • Tadlock picked up her first victory of the season by throwing 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out three hitters against Lipscomb.
