Toreros Fall to Aztecs on the Road

SAN DIEGO– Playing their fourth consecutive game in their hometown for the first time this season, the San Diego softball team (14-17, 0-0 WCC) came up short against their crosstown rival San Diego State (18-10, 2-1 MWC) by a 10-0 final score on Wednesday evening at the SDSU Softball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Starting the action on Wednesday night was a great plate appearance from Carly Ruiz as she worked a nine pitch walk for USD's first base runner of the game.
  • McKenna Braegelmann then entered the circle in the bottom of the first and ended her first inning with a swinging strikeout after the Aztecs scored twice to take an early 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
  • San Diego State was able to add on to their lead in the bottom of the second as they scored five times to grow their advantage to 7-0.
  • USD's offense began to author a comeback in the top of the third as Mikalyn Emanuelli and Kaitlyn Wynia each recorded base hits but were left on base to keep the Toreros off the board.
  • Kaitlyn Bartlow entered the game to pitch for USD with a pair of runners on and one out in the third. She was able to help limit the damage as San Diego trailed 10-0 through the first three innings.
  • Bartlow would re-take the mound in the fourth as she set down San Diego State in order and recorded a strikeout on a nice breaking ball that fluttered out of the zone for a swinging K.
  • The Aztecs had no trouble in the Torero half of the fifth as they were able to pick up the 10-0 victory on their home diamond on Wednesday night.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Bartlow turned in a nice showing in relief as she went 1 2/3 innings and allowed just one run while striking out a pair of Aztec hitters.
  • Emanuelli and Wynia each recorded a pair of hits for the Toreros, while Ruiz worked the team's lone walk on Wednesday evening.
