OGDEN, Utah– Returning to the road for another full weekend, the San Diego softball team (16-17, 0-0 WCC) was in action for a pair of games on Friday afternoon against Weber State (9-22, 0-0 Big Sky) at the program's Wildcat Softball Field.
The Toreros started the day strong as they picked up a 7-2 victory in the first game led by the two-way play from Emma Giaime who threw five innings and allowed just two unearned runs while doubling twice. Taylor Johnson and Alyssa Hernandez both homered for USD to help them author the come from behind victory.
San Diego wasn't done overcoming early deficits as they trailed by three runs early before hitting their stride and picking up the 8-5 victory in game two to earn the doubleheader sweep. Sophia Pinedo got the start in game two and recorded three hits, while Michelle Delgado doubled and tripled to help USD get back to one game under .500 for the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED SAN DIEGO 7, WEBER STATE 2
- Getting the action started on Friday, the Toreros were set down in order to begin the game in the top of the first.
- Giaime then entered the circle for her first inning of work as she allowed just one run and worked around some traffic to keep the Wildcats from posting a crooked number early.
- Shawnese Hogue-Lacy attempted to kick start the San Diego offense in the second as she worked a one out walk for the Toreros' first base runner but was left stranded at second base.
- USD's defense began to shine in the second as Giaime made a great catch on a line drive and doubled off the base runner at first for a double play. One pitch later, Delgado made a fantastic play charging on a bunt attempt to throw out the runner and end the inning with San Diego trailing by a run.
- Breaking through with two away in the inning, Kaitlyn Wynia and Carly Ruiz each recorded singles before Delgado drove a double down the left field line to plate Wynia and even the score at one-all.
- Giaime helped keep the momentum on the Toreros' side as she got a pair of ground outs and a fly out to post another zero to keep the game tied through the first three innings.
- Weber State would add another run in their half of the fourth as they took a 2-1 lead heading into the final three innings.
- The Toreros were undeterred as they got to work offensively with Mikalyn Emanuelli and Carly Ruiz each reaching base on errors to put runners on the corners with one away in the frame. Delgado would come through as she put the ball in play with a fielder's choice to score Emanuelli and even the game back up at two apiece.
- Johnson would then step up to the dish and continue her hot hitting as she sent a 2-1 pitch over the right center field wall to score Ruiz and Delgado giving San Diego their first lead of the day at 5-2.
- Giamie returned to the circle for the bottom of the fifth and came up big for her team. After allowing a one out double, she recorded her first strikeout of the game with a runner on third base who advanced on a wild pitch. She then induced a ground out to short to keep the Wildcats off the board and maintained USD's three run lead.
- After San Diego was held off the board in the sixth, Kelsey Tadlock took over for the Toreros in the circle and tossed a scoreless sixth while recording a pair of strikeouts in her first inning of the day.
- Looking to add to their lead late, Hernandez came through for her team as she smacked her first home run of the season over the wall in left for a two-run shot that gave San Diego the 7-2 lead.
- Working with a big lead, Tadlock got right to work and ended the game with a swinging strikeout to help the Toreros take game one by a 7-2 final score.
HOW IT HAPPENED SAN DIEGO 8, WEBER STATE 5
- Getting game two started on a high note, Wynia drove a base hit to left for a lead off single and Delgado was hit by a pitch but USD was unable to score in their first trip to hit.
- Weber State responded in the bottom half by putting up three runs of their own to take an early lead.
- Looking to claw back in the next inning, Hernandez took the first pitch she saw and drove it to the wall in left to put a runner in scoring position. She would come around to score two hitters later as Emanuelli sent a sacrifice fly to left that scored Hernandez and made it a 3-1 game.
- The Wildcats would add another run to their total in the bottom of the second as they pushed their advantage back up to three runs at 4-1 through two innings of play.
- Answering back from the Weber State run, Ruiz led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Delgado would reach base on a fielder's choice and would come around to score later that inning on an RBI single from Arisa Tovar to get USD back within two.
- Kaitlyn Bartlow went back out to start the bottom of the third and worked around a lead off walk to retire the next three she faced to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard.
- Pinedo would help set up USD's biggest inning of the game with a lead off single to right field, as she came around to score on a Wynia triple to right center field that made it a one run game. Ruiz then sent a line drive to left field to score Wynia to tie up the game and forced Weber State to get into their bullpen.
- Delgado greeted the new pitcher with a double down the right field line to put two more runners in scoring position for Johnson. Continuing her big day, she promptly sent a ground ball up the middle to score Ruiz and Delgado giving the Toreros a 6-4 lead in the middle innings.
- Bartlow did a great job of keeping the momentum on USD's side with a scoreless bottom of the fourth to maintain the Toreros' two run lead.
- Weber State put up a scoreless top of the fifth and added one more run to their total in the bottom of the inning as the Torero lead shrank to just 6-5 with two more frames to go.
- Ruiz led off the USD half of the sixth with another base hit the other way to set up Delgado who drove a triple to the right center gap to push the lead back up to 7-5. With two out in the inning, Hernandez continued her big day with an infield single that scored Delgado to help San Diego push their lead to three runs.
- Tadlock took the mound in the bottom of the sixth as she looked to pick up another save and ended her first inning of work with a swinging strikeout.
- Heading back out for the seventh, Tadlock had no trouble as she retired all three hitters she faced in order to help San Diego earn the 8-5 victory and the doubleheader sweep on Friday afternoon.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Giamie starred at the plate and in the circle on Friday as she threw five innings and allowed no earned runs, while also driving a couple of doubles the other way in the game one victory.
- Johnson once again starred for her team by going a combined 3-for-7 with a home run, five RBI, a run scored and a walk drawn at Weber State.
- Hernandez turned in a great afternoon as well as she went 3-for-8 with a home run, three RBI and a pair of runs scored. She's the lone Torero to have played and started in all of her team's first 33 games.
- Tadlock picked up two more saves on Friday as she combined to throw four scoreless frames and struck out five Wildcat hitters to begin the weekend series.
- Delgado was once again a force in the three spot of USD's batting order going a combined 3-for-7 with a triple, double and five runs scored. She also showed off defensively by making a couple of nice plays at third base.
- Pinedo got the start in the second part of the doubleheader and went 3-for-3 with a run scored while playing shortstop in Ogden.
