Toreros Defeated by Anteaters in Midweek Matchup

San Diego suffers 12-3 loss to UC Irvine on Tuesday night at Fowler Park

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (2-10, 0-0 WCC) scored three times in the final inning of its Tuesday night matchup against UC Irvine (9-3, 0-0 Big West) but could not overcome the high-powered Anteater offense, dropping a tough 12-3 decision in a midweek non-conference contest at Fowler Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After neither team scored through the first three innings of play, UCI put up four runs in the top of the fourth with a three-RBI triple, and a sacrifice fly.
  • The Anteaters had a 7-0 lead after the top of the sixth inning via a pair of RBI doubles.
  • Two RBI singles, an RBI sacrifice fly, and a wild pitch across the eighth and ninth innings made it 12-0 in favor of UCI.
  • The Toreros got on the board in the bottom of the ninth with RBI singles from AJ Beltre and AJ Anzai to make it 12-3, but got no closer.
ON THE MOUND
  • Vanderbilt transfer David Horn Jr. got the start for USD and threw a one-two-three first inning in his San Diego debut while notching two strikeouts. He exited the game after the opening frame as planned, due to being on a pitch count while working his way back from injury.
  • Jamie Robertson's scoreless seventh inning provided another highlight for USD on the mound after the junior college transfer worked around a walk in what marked his second appearance as a Torero.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Nico Libed extended his hit streak to eight games with a single to left center in the first inning.
  • Austin Smith and Isaiah Lane each went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • AJ Anzai drove in two of San Diego's three runs with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth inning.
  • Horn Jr. and Brian Harbour both made their debuts for San Diego on the mound, while Vincent Venverloh made his collegiate debut at the plate.
  • After making five appearances on the mound this season, Jack McWilliams got his first at-bat as a Torero.
