SAN DIEGO — No. 7 San Diego men's tennis cruised through its second round matchup of the Ed Collins Invitational on Saturday morning, as it defeated No. 66 Old Dominion 4-1 at the Hogan Tennis center to advance to the championship round of the tournament.
The Toreros' dominance started in the doubles competition, where Oliver Tarvet made his return after going down with an injury on Feb. 21 at Arizona. The Junior teamed up with Iiro Vasa in No. 1 doubles and defeated their ranked opponents 7-5 to win the doubles point for USD, just after Stian Klaassen and Savriyan Danilov secured a 6-2 victory in No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Blake Kasday dropped his match on court seven, 5-7, 0-6, to tie the match up at one point all, but the Toreros responded quickly as Adrien Berrut and Klaassen each won their matches in quick succession in No. 3 and four singles. Berrut defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-3, while Klaassen was victorious by a pair of 6-3 margins to extend the USD lead to two at 3-1.
Iiro Vasa sealed the deal for USD on court two by winning in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the match. Danilov and Neo Niedner's matches in No. 1 and five singles were each cut short with the victory.
With the win, the Toreros will advance to the championship round of the Ed Collins invitational, and will face No. 45 UC Santa Barbara at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.
