GCU Outlasts Toreros on Saturday Night

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Playing under the lights on a cool evening in the desert, the San Diego softball team (10-15, 0-0 WCC) battled hard but couldn't emerge victorious against the Grand Canyon Antelopes (19-3, 0-0 WAC) falling by a 7-5 score on Saturday night.

Taylor Johnson turned in another stellar night at the plate as she recorded three hits and drove her fifth home run of the season over the left center wall to get USD's scoring started.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Getting the offense going early, Carly Ruiz reached second base on a one out error to set up Johnson with a runner in scoring position. Driving a 1-2 pitch on the outer portion of the plate, Johnson snuck her fifth home run of the season over the wall in left center to give San Diego a 2-0 lead as the team's strong first inning offense continued.
  • Emma Giaime got the start in the circle and recorded a pair of strikeouts and allowed just one run as the Toreros led 2-1 at the end of the first inning.
  • USD continued to flex their muscles in the second inning as they loaded the bases for Michelle Delgado who drove a base hit to right center field that scored Tele Jennings and Hailey Mulligan to grow the Torero lead to 4-1.
  • Johnson would continue her strong day at the plate with a beautifully placed single down the right field line that scored Ruiz to give San Diego the 5-1 lead.
  • Looking for a shut down inning, Giaime didn't allow a base hit and put up a zero to keep her team's four run lead.
  • GCU responded in their half of the third when they put three runs on the board with San Diego now holding onto a 5-4 lead.
  • Mikalyn Emanuelli would spark another Torero rally in the fourth as she led off the inning with a single and reached second on a wild pitch but would end up being stranded in scoring position.
  • The Antelopes would score three times in the fifth inning as they grabbed a late 7-5 lead with just two innings remaining.
  • After both teams were held off the board in the sixth, the Toreros continued to battle despite being down to their final out. EJ Joyner was hit by a pitch, and Jennings recorded an opposite field base hit to put the tying run on base.
  • GCU was able to get out of the inning as they picked up the 7-5 victory on their home diamond Saturday night.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Johnson was outstanding at the plate recording her first three hit game of the season with a home run, three RBI and a run scored against GCU.
  • Delgado turned in a 1-for-4 evening at the dish and drove in a pair of runs against the Lopes in Phoenix.
  • Tadlock was outstanding in relief for San Diego as she retired all four batters she faced and recorded a strikeout on Saturday night.
  • Ruiz scored a pair of runs as she hit in the two-hole and went 1-for-4 with a single in USD's third game of the weekend.
