PHOENIX, Ariz. – Wrapping up their time in the Valley of the Sun, the San Diego softball team (11-15, 0-0 WCC) played a strong overall game as they bested Utah State (13-9, 0-0 MWC) by a 6-2 final score on Sunday afternoon at GCU Softball Stadium.
Kelsey Tadlock excelled in the circle for the Toreros as she tossed six innings and allowed just a pair of runs in USD's first victory of the season over Utah State.
At the plate, Taylor Johnson had another strong performance by going 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI, while Alyssa Hernandez drove in a pair of runs as well against the Aggies.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Beginning the action on Sunday afternoon, Tadlock issued a lead off walk but then set down the next three hitters she faced to post a scoreless top of the first.
- In the Torero first, Hailey Mulligan began the day by reaching on an error but was stranded in scoring position to keep the game scoreless.
- After both pitchers tossed scoreless frames in the second, USD's offense got to work in the bottom of third with Joecellia Roberts recording a one out single for the Toreros' first hit of the game.
- With two away in the inning and a pair of runners on base, Hernandez delivered a clutch RBI single, and Johnson followed that with a two-run double to right center that scored Carly Ruiz and Hernandez that gave USD a 3-0 lead.
- Utah State wouldn't go away quietly as they put up their first run of the game in the top of the fourth but Tadlock was able to limit the damage as her team held onto their 3-1 lead.
- Answering back in the bottom of the fourth, Mikalyn Emanuelli began the frame by working a walk and would come around to score on an RBI base on balls from Hernandez as the Toreros once again led by three with the score 4-1 USD.
- Tadlock would continue to deliver in the clutch for her team as she allowed just one run after loading the bases with nobody out in the fifth by getting a couple of fly outs and a ground out to keep San Diego ahead by a 4-2 margin.
- Continuing to keep the pressure on the Aggies, the Toreros would score twice more in the bottom of the fifth as Arisa Tovar delivered an RBI single that plated Shawnese Hogue-Lacy and Mulligan singled home EJ Joyner as USD led by a 6-2 score with two innings remaining.
- Both offenses were held in check in the sixth as the Toreros entered the final inning with their four run lead still in tact.
- Kaitlyn Bartlow entered the circle for San Diego in the seventh with a runner on first and nobody out. She would go on to set down all three hitters she faced in order as the Toreros picked up the weekend split in Phoenix and earned their first victory over the Aggies in 2025 by a 6-2 final score.

- Johnson once again starred for the Toreros in Phoenix as she went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI as she hit over .500 across her four starts this weekend at GCU.
- Tadlock was money in the circle for her team as she earned her fourth win of the season after throwing six innings of two run ball and recording a pair of strikeouts against the Aggies.
- Getting her first start in right field this season, Roberts went 2-for-3 at the plate to help her team pick up the victory.
- Hitting back in the three spot in the batting order, Hernandez went 1-for-3 with a walk and a pair of RBI in her team's fourth game against Utah State during the 2025 season.
