San Diego Silences Portland Bats to Earn Seventh Straight Win

Toreros beat Pilots 3-1 on Friday night at Fowler Park behind strong pitching performances from Scolari, Cody, and Mosiello

SAN DIEGO — Eight-plus shutout innings from a trio of Torero pitchers headlined a 3-1 victory for San Diego baseball (13-24, 8-3 WCC) on Friday evening as it clinched a series victory over Portland (17-22, 9-5 WCC) at Fowler Park.

Aden Howard, Connor Meidroth, and Jack Gurevitch notched back-to-back-to-back RBIs via a triple (Howard) and two doubles (Gurevitch and Meidroth) in the bottom of the fourth inning to register the Toreros' three runs. 

Cal Scolari started on the mound and threw five shutout innings, striking out three before giving way to Hayden Cody, who threw 2.2 scoreless frames of his own while punching out four. 

Portland scored once with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to cut into USD's lead, but Andrew Mosiello shut down the Pilots' last-chance rally by striking out the side.

NOTABLE
  • Scolari earned the win to move to 3-2 in 2025.
  • Mosiello picked up his first save of the season after throwing the final 1.1 innings of the game. 
  • Gurevitch recorded a game-high three hits. 
  • AJ Beltre was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Gurevitch, Beltre, Howard, AJ Anzai, Austin Smith, and Connor Meidroth all drew a walk. 
  • USD has now won seven games in a row.

San Diego will seek its second consecutive West Coast Conference sweep in the finale against Portland tomorrow afternoon at Fowler Park. First pitch opposite the Pilots is set for 12:05 p.m.
