Three-Run Eighth Secures Sweep of Portland at Fowler Park

Key RBIs from Connor Meidroth and Jack Gurevitch fuel comeback win over Pilots to extend USD’s win streak to eight

SAN DIEGO — To finish off the three-game series against Portland, the University of San Diego baseball team was looking for a sweep and extend its winning streak to eight Saturday afternoon at Fowler Park.

However, the Toreros were going to have to come from behind in order to bring out the brooms for the second consecutive West Coast Conference series.

Despite trailing by as many as three runs, USD remained focused, winning 5-4, highlighted by a three-run eighth inning to take the lead and capped off by Jack Gurevitch's go-ahead RBI double to give the Toreros their first lead of the game.

Then, Austin Smith came in to close the game with his third save of the season for USD (14-24, 9-3 WCC).

Prior to Gurevitch's RBI triple in the eighth inning, Aden Howard recorded a sacrifice fly RBI, scoring Rex Watson. Then, Connor Meidroth hit an RBI triple into the right field corner, which scored Ryan Ward, who pinch ran for AJ Anzai. That tied the game at four and led to a Portland pitching change before Gurevitch's heroics, swinging on the first pitch to cap off the three-run inning.

Portland (17-23, 9-6 WCC) took a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings on a two-run home run and an RBI double. That came before Smith singled up the middle, scoring Isaiah Lane and Gurevitch to cut the deficit down to 3-2.

Then, the Pilots tacked on another run, via the long ball in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.

However, the Torero bullpen was lights-out from the fifth inning on. Fernando Palencia worked a scoreless fifth inning with a strikeout while allowing a base hit. Porter Rovin threw three perfect innings in the sixth, seventh and eighth with four strikeouts, holding it down for Smith to get the save.

Rovin, who attended nearby Sage Creek High School in Carlsbad, CA, earned his first collegiate victory, as it marked the third time he has thrown at least three innings in a game this season.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Isaiah Lane went 3-for-5 with three doubles. That ties the program record for most doubles in a single game. He also raises his batting average to .317 with his trio of hits.
  • Jack Gurevitch went 2-for-5 Saturday afternoon to raise his batting average to .380, which leads the team and is second in the WCC. He also recorded his conference-leading 57th hit of the season.
  • Austin Smith's two-run single in the third inning increased his average to .346 and his RBI total to 36.
  • This is the Toreros' first sweep against the PIlots since March 17-19, 2017, when USD won all three games at Fowler Park.
