SAN DIEGO — A seventh-inning home run from freshman
Rex Watson helped lead San Diego baseball to a 8-6 win over crosstown rival San Diego State on Monday night.
Watson's three-run blast erased a one-run deficit for the Toreros (15-24, 9-3 WCC), who emerged victorious for a ninth consecutive game after squandering an early lead at Fowler Park.
USD was ahead 5-1 in the third inning courtesy of RBIs from
AJ Beltre,
AJ Anzai, and Watson before the Aztecs (14-27, 10-8 Mountain West) scored five times with two outs in the top of the fifth inning to pull ahead by a 6-5 margin.
Austin Smith drew a walk and
AJ Beltre was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the seventh, then Watson worked a full count. A pitch later, he deposited a go-ahead longball onto the roof of the Manchester Village Apartments beyond the right-field wall. His majestic shot landed adjacent to the sign denoting 452 feet of distance from home plate perched atop the building.
That was all the offense San Diego needed in Monday's midweek matchup.
Jack McWilliams stranded a pair of baserunners as part of a scoreless eighth, and
Fernando Palencia sealed the win with a run-free ninth that was punctuated by an incredible full-extension diving catch from Smith in center field to secure the last out.
NOTABLE
- Tristan LaMaison made his first career start on the mound on Monday and allowed only an unearned run on two hits across three innings while walking none.
- Jamie Robertson struck out six consecutive batters across the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings as part of a dominant relief appearance. He picked up the win, which marked the first of his NCAA career.
- Watson's homer was the latest in a series of clutch round-trippers for the freshman. He has also hit both a game-tying (March 16 against Columbia) and go-ahead (April 8 vs. UC San Diego) grand slam this season.
