USD Dance Team Tryouts Now Open for 2025-26 Season

Skilled dancers are invited to audition for a season of performance, spirit, and competition.

SAN DIEGO — The USD Dance Team invites talented and passionate dancers to audition for the 2025-26 season. As part of USD Athletics, the team performs at home football and basketball games, select campus events, and community appearances. With plans to compete at College Dance Team USA Nationals, the program is expanding its reach and looking for high-level dancers eager to perform, represent, and inspire.

Tryout Overview

Date: Saturday, May 3, 2025
Location: Jenny Craig Pavilion, USD Campus
Schedule:
  • Check-in: 9:00-9:15 AM
  • Clinic: 9:15 AM-12:00 PM
  • Lunch Break: 12:00-12:45 PM
  • Auditions: 1:00-5:00 PM
Dancers will be evaluated on across-the-floor technique, jazz/pom/hip hop combinations, sideline material, and a 1-minute prepared solo. Interviews and possible callbacks will also take place during the afternoon session.

Audition Requirements

All required materials must be submitted by Friday, April 25, at 5:00 PM PDT. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Required materials include:
  • Registration Form
  • Online Pre-Audition Packet
  • Medical Clearance Packet including:
    • Recent physical (within 6 months)
    • Sickle cell test results
  • Audition Videos (New dancers only) featuring:
    • Technical elements (pirouettes, leaps, jumps, etc.)
    • 1-minute jazz/contemporary solo
    • 30-second pom and 30-second hip hop routines
    • Optional second video (up to 3 minutes)
All videos should be uploaded to YouTube (unlisted or public) and submitted via email to Coach KC Hellenkamp at khellenkamp@sandiego.edu.

Audition Day Expectations

  • Attire: Form-fitting dancewear; colorful attire encouraged
  • Footwear: Jazz shoes or half-soles, hip hop shoes
  • Presentation: Collegiate and professional appearance
  • Bring: Water, snacks, poms (if available)

Team Commitments

Members of the USD Dance Team must:
  • Prioritize attendance at all practices and performances
  • Arrive two weeks early in August for fall training camp
  • Represent the university with professionalism on and off the court
  • Maintain academic standing
  • Cover annual team dues ($800–$1,000)
  • Commit to open, respectful communication with teammates and coaching staff

Looking Ahead

Team members can expect a year filled with performances at football, basketball, and other athletic events, as well as appearances across campus and in the community. Additional opportunities include attending ProAction Dance Camp (select dancers) and national competition travel.
