Toreros Fall in Home Finale Despite Giaime's Great Outing

SAN DIEGO– Competing for the final time on their home diamond in 2025, the San Diego softball team (20-26, 4-8 WCC) dropped the rubber game of their three game series against Pacific (16-30, 5-7 WCC) by a 4-1 final score on Sunday afternoon at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex.

Emma Giaime starred for the Toreros in Sunday's game as she threw 6 1/3 great innings in relief where she didn't allow a run and struck out five Tiger hitters.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Pacific put together a strong opening inning as they plated four runs to grab an early lead on Sunday afternoon.
  • USD didn't wait long to try and counter the Tigers' early offense as Mikalyn Emanuelli singled to begin the game and came around to score on an RBI single from Michelle Delgado that made it a 4-1 game.
  • Both pitchers settled into the game nicely as they posted scoreless frames in the second and third innings respectively.
  • Giamie threw her first one, two, three inning of the game in the top of the fourth as she induced three consecutive ground outs to keep Pacific off the scoreboard.
  • After the Tigers had their first their first two hitters reach base in the top of the fifth, Giaime was able to get a huge strikeout and a ground out to end the inning and post yet another zero to keep USD within striking distance.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, EJ Joyner began the inning with a line drive single the other way, but USD was unable to plate her as the game remained 4-1 Pacific.
  • After a pair of one, two, three frames in the sixth inning, the Tigers loaded up the bases in the bottom of the seventh as they threatened to expand their lead. Kelsey Tadlock entered the circle for USD and recorded a huge out to leave the bases loaded and keep the Toreros within striking distance.
  • Pacific was able to retire San Diego in order in the bottom of the seventh as they picked up the 4-1 victory in Sunday's series finale.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Giaime was sensational for her team on Sunday throwing 6 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and striking out five hitters against Pacific.
  • Delgado turned in a 1-for-3 afternoon at the plate with an RBI and played solid defense at the hot corner for the Toreros.
  • Competing in their final home games for USD, Emanuelli and Joyner each recorded base hits in the series finale.
