MORAGA– Back in action for their final series of the 2025 season, the San Diego softball team (20-28, 4-10 WCC) competed in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Saint Mary's (25-22, 8-3 WCC) at Cottrell Field in the East Bay.
Kelsey Tadlock threw a complete game in the opener and EJ Joyner blasted her second home run of the season, but USD came up a run short as they lost to the Gaels 3-2 to begin the day.
In game two, Saint Mary's took control early in the ball game as they picked up a 7-1 victory with USD's lone run coming on an RBI single from Taylor Johnson to pad her team lead in the category.
HOW IT HAPPENED SAINT MARY'S 3, SAN DIEGO 2
- Getting the action started on Saturday, both teams were retired in order in the first inning as Tadlock set the tone early by recording a pair of strikeouts in her first inning of work.
- After the first two hitters for USD were set down in the second, Alyssa Hernandez kick started the offense with an opposite field double and would come around to score on Joyner's two-run homer on the first pitch she saw to give San Diego the early 2-0 lead.
- Saint Mary's answered the Toreros' initial run in their half of the third as they scored once but Tadlock did a great job of working around additional traffic to keep her team ahead 2-1 heading into the middle innings.
- Bay Area native Shawnese Hogue-Lacy got the Torero offense going in the fourth with a lead off single but they couldn't plate her as the team held onto their one-run advantage.
- Tadlock continued her stellar outing in the fourth and fifth innings as she retired six consecutive hitters she faced which featured a pair of strikeouts as well.
- The Gaels broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning as they scored twice to take a 3-2 lead heading into the final inning of play.
- USD battled in their final frame but couldn't plate the equalizing run as they fell by a 3-2 final score in game one of the doubleheader.
HOW IT HAPPENED SAINT MARY'S 7, SAN DIEGO 1
- Beginning play in game two, the Toreros received a great at-bat from Kaitlyn Wynia who worked a walk to begin the game. USD was unable to plate him as the game was scoreless to end the top of the first.
- Emma Giaime got the start in the circle for game two and set down the first three Saint Mary's she faced in order to begin her outing.
- The Gaels opened the scoring for game two in the bottom of the second as they plated a pair of runs to grab an early 2-0 lead.
- Saint Mary's would tack on a pair in the bottom of the third as they led 4-0 heading into the middle innings of the game.
- Mikalyn Emanuelli would deliver USD's first hit of the game with a lead off single in the fourth and came around to score on an RBI single from Johnson that made it a 4-1 game.
- SMC would score twice more in the fifth and would add an additional run in the bottom of the sixth that made it 7-1.
- USD wasn't done in the final inning as they drew a trio of walks from Joyner, Hailey Mulligan and Wynia to load the bases but were unable to score as the Gaels picked up the 7-1 victory to wrap up the doubleheader.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Tadlock threw her third complete game of the season to begin the doubleheader as she tossed six innings allowing just three runs and striking out seven Gael hitters.
- Joyner had a strong overall day at the plate as she hit her second home run of the season and drew a pair of walks against Saint Mary's.
- Johnson came through for her team with an RBI single and a walk drawn in both games in Moraga on Saturday.
